尊敬的劉延?xùn)|國務(wù)委員、羅格伯爵、各位嘉賓、各位朋友：

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

今晚是第五屆東亞運(yùn)動會開幕的大日子。得到劉國務(wù)委員及國際奧林匹克委員會主席羅格伯爵專程來港為運(yùn)動會主持開幕式，實在是我們的榮幸。我 謹(jǐn)代表香港特別行政區(qū)政府，感謝兩位的支持，同時熱烈歡迎各參賽地區(qū)的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)及部長、各位運(yùn)動員、隨團(tuán)人員、義工朋友及來自世界各地的觀眾。

Good evening to you all! It is an honour to have State Councillor, Madam Liu Yandong and the Honourable Count Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, with us tonight to officiate at the opening ceremony of the Fifth East Asian Games. On behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, thank you for your support of our city in hosting these Games. Also, a very warm welcome to all of you: leaders and ministers of participating places, athletes, team officials, volunteers, and spectators from all over the world.

第五屆東亞運(yùn)動會是香港首次以東道主身分舉辦的國際大型綜合運(yùn)動會，為香港的體育歷史揭開重要一頁。今次是歷來最大規(guī)模的東亞運(yùn)動會，約二 千三百名來自九個國家和地區(qū)的頂級運(yùn)動員會在香港競逐錦標(biāo)。他們經(jīng)過長年的艱苦訓(xùn)練，此刻正是他們享受比賽、發(fā)揮體育精神、體現(xiàn)公平競技和建立友誼的美好 時光。我預(yù)祝各參賽健兒在運(yùn)動會能夠取得佳績。

Tonight, Hong Kong opens a new chapter in its sporting history. We are privileged to be the host of the Fifth East Asian Games. Not only is it the first large-scale international multi-sports event in Hong Kong, it is also the largest ever East Asian Games. Over 2 300 top athletes from nine countries and regions will compete in the Games. And through sport, we will celebrate the cultural diversity, friendship and indomitable spirit of our region. I wish all the athletes the best of luck in their competitions.

我同時衷心感謝籌委會、各主辦單位及幕后工作人員的`悉心籌備和安排，讓運(yùn)動會可以順利展開。香港會再次發(fā)揮好客之道，熱情款待訪港賓客，讓我們向世界展示香港作為亞洲盛事之都的魅力，以及我們致力提升區(qū)內(nèi)體育水平的決心。

I also thank the Planning Committee, organisers, volunteers and those working hard behind the scenes for their excellent preparations and arrangements for the Games. Hong Kong extends the hand of friendship to all our guests and visitors. We look forward to showcasing our city to the world and to elevating sports in the region to new heights.

我謹(jǐn)此祝愿第五屆東亞運(yùn)動會圓滿成功。我希望各位能夠盡情享受開幕式的歡樂氣氛，并且繼續(xù)投入隨后八天的激烈賽事，一同創(chuàng)造香港2009東亞運(yùn)動會的傳奇!

I wish the Fifth East Asian Games every success. I look forward to sharing with you the joy and excitement of the events tonight and throughout the Games.
