Hello, I'm Severn Suzuki speaking for E.C.O. - The Environmental Children's Organisation.
We are a group of twelve and thirteen-year-olds from Canada trying to make a difference:VanessaSuttie, Morgan Geisler, Michelle Quigg and me. We raised all the money ourselves to come six thousand miles to tell you adults you must change your ways. Coming here today, I have no hidden agenda. I am fighting for my future.
Losing my future is not like losing an election or a few points on the stock market. I am here to speak for all generations to come.
I am here to speak on behalf of the starving children around the world whose cries go unheard.
I am here to speak for the countless animals dying across this planet because they have nowhere left to go. We cannot afford to be not heard.
I am afraid to go out in the sun now because of the holes in the ozone. I am afraid to breathe the air because I don't know what chemicals are in it.
I used to go fishing in Vancouver with my dad until just a few years ago we found the fish full of cancers. And now we hear about animals and plants going extinct every day -- vanishing forever.
In my life, I have dreamt of seeing the great herds of wild animals, jungles and rainforests full of birds and butterfilies, but now I wonder if they will even exist for my children to see.
Did you have to worry about these little things when you were my age?
All this is happening before our eyes and yet we act as if we have all the time we want and all the solutions. I'm only a child and I don't have all the solutions, but I want you to realize, neither do you!
You don't know how to fix the holes in our ozone layer. You don't know how to bring salmon back up a dead stream. You don't know how to bring back an animal now extinct. And you can't bring back forests that once grew where there is now desert. If you don't know how to fix it, please stop breaking it!
Here, you may be delegates of your governments, business people, organisers, reporters or poiticians - but really you are mothers and fathers, brothers and sister, aunts and uncles - and all of you are somebody's child.
I'm only a child yet I know we are all part of a family, five billion strong, in fact, 30 million species strong and we all share the same air, water and soil -- borders and governments will never change that.
I'm only a child yet I know we are all in this together and should act as one single world towards one single goal.
In my anger, I am not blind, and in my fear, I am not afraid to tell the world how I feel.
In my country, we make so much waste, we buy and throw away, buy and throw away, and yet northern countries will not share with the needy. Even when we have more than enough, we are afraid to lose some of our wealth, afraid to share.
In Canada, we live the privileged life, with plenty of food, water and shelter -- we have watches, bicycles, computers and television sets.
Two days ago here in Brazil, we were shocked when we spent some time with some children living on the streets. And this is what one child told us: "I wish I was rich and if I were, I would give all the street children food, clothes, medicine, shelter and love and affection."
If a child on the street who has nothing, is willing to share, why are we who have everyting still so greedy?
I can't stop thinking that these children are my age, that it makes a tremendous difference where you are born, that I could be one of those children living in the Favellas of Rio; I could be a child starving in Somalia; a victim of war in the Middle East or a beggar in India.
I'm only a child yet I know if all the money spent on war was spent on ending poverty and finding environmental answers, what a wonderful place this earth would be!
At school, even in kindergarten, you teach us to behave in the world. You teach us: not to fight with others, to respect others, to clean up our mess, not to hurt other creatures, to share - not be greedy.
Then why do you go out and do the things you tell us not to do?
Do not forget why you're attending these conferences, who you're doing this for -- we are your own children. You are deciding what kind of world we will grow up in. Parents should be able to comfort their children by saying "everyting's going to be alright" , "we're doing the best we can" and "it's not the end of the world".
But I don't think you can say that to us anymore. Are we even on your list of priorities? My father always says "You are what you do, not what you say."
Well, what you do makes me cry at night. You grown ups say you love us. I challenge you, please make your actions reflect your words. Thank you for listening

How to describe beauty
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. I am glad to stand here and give a short speech. My topic is “how to describe beauty”. If we want to describe beauty specifically, we should manage to find out the real beauty firstly. As Rodin said, “The life is not a lack of beauty, but the lack of discovery.”
In natural world, beauty is everywhere. For example, the mountains and the sun. The mountains display different scenery in different seasons. In summer, they seem to wear green coats. We will feel comfortable when we look at them. In winter, they seem to wear white coats. How beautiful they are! For the sun, our moods fluctuate when we look at it. The rising sun makes us energetic and hopeful. The setting sun let us feel peaceful and harmonious. So we can describe natural beauty in various ways.
In human community, beauty includes the outward beauty and the inner beauty. For the outward beauty, we can use beautiful words to describe it. As we can see, more and more people pursue the ideal shape so that there are so many people losing weight. Indeed, we like the good-looking. However, I deem that it is skin-deep for us to pay attention to the outward beauty only.
The inner beauty is more moving than the outward beauty. For example, the explosion hazard in Binhai, Tianjin, on August 12th. At that
night, many firemen were obliged to put out the fire and showed their courage. In the end, many firemen sacrificed their lives for the benefits of the local people. Naturally, we can discover the inner beauty from them. We are touched by their fearlessness and we have the utmost respect for them.
Beauty is everywhere as long as we pay attention to our life. By taking care of the various natural beauty and focusing on the inner beauty more than the outward beauty, we can explicitly describe beauty. Let us enjoy beauty around us.
That’s all. Thanks for your listening.

Hi, everybody. Sunday is International Women's Day-a day to celebrate remarkable1 women and girls worldwide, and to re-dedicate ourselves to defending the fundamental rights and dignity of all people.
That's why, this week, Michelle and I launched a new initiative on a topic that's close to both our hearts: girls' education.
It's called "Let Girls Learn." And its goal is to help more girls around the world go to school and stay in school. Right now, 62 million girls who should be in school, are not. And that's not an accident. It's the direct result of barriers, large and small, that stand in the way of girls who want to learn.
Maybe their families can't afford the school fees. Maybe the risk of being hurt or kidnapped or even killed by men who will do anything to stop girls from learning is just too great. Or maybe they aren't in school because they're expected to get married and become mothers while they're still teenagers-or even earlier. In too many parts of the world, girls are still valued more for their bodies than for their minds. That's just plain wrong. And we all have to do more to stop it.
That's the idea behind "Let Girls Learn." We're ma-ki-ng it clear to any country that's our partner-or that wants to be our partner-that they need to get serious about increasing the number of girls in school. Our diplomats2 and development experts are already hard at work. Our Peace Corps3 volunteers will play a big role, too. And we're putting our partnerships4 with NGOs, businesses and foundations to work on behalf of girls everywhere.
I come to this issue as the leader of the world's largest economy, and Commander-in-Chief of the world's most powerful military, and I'm convinced that a world in which girls are educated is a safer, more stable, more prosperous place. When girls are educated, their future children are healthier and better nourished. Their future wages increase, which in turn strengthens their families' security. National growth gets a boost, too. And places where women and girls are treated as full and equal citizens tend to be more stable and more democratic.
But I also come to this issue as the father of two wonderful young women. And I know that there are lots of girls just like Malia and Sasha out there-girls who are funny and caring and inquisitive5 and strong, and have so much to offer the world.
It's a privilege to be the parent of girls. And we want to make sure that no girl out there is denied her chance to learn-that no girl is prevented from ma-ki-ng her unique contributions to the world. Because every girl-every girl-deserves our respect. And every girl deserves an education.
