Why does the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side!
That’s an old joke in the west, but it came to my mind again when I saw people crossing the road at the intersection of S hanxi Road and Huaihai Road in Shanghai.
When the traffic light was red, a group of people were waiting for the light to change. Suddenly one man began rushing to the other side of the road. Soon others followed him at the crossing and more people did the same. Just like chickens, they didn’t mind the honking horns(喇叭聲) and kept crossing the road in a mess.
Every year several thousand people are either killed or hurt on the roads in Shanghai. And at least one third of them were jaywalking(亂穿馬路). Jaywalking is very common in Shanghai. It seems that jaywalkers are not afraid of the danger to themselves.
Traffic laws are to keep people safe. So we should obey them, and have good road-crossing habits. When someone starts to jaywalk, we should stop him, and never follow him. That way we can avoid the traffic accidents.
( ) 45. The underlined word “intersection” here probably means “ ”.
A. road B. bridge C. crossing D. traffic
( ) 46. The writer saw people in Shanghai that day.

I have a neighbor we call “Happy”. I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her say a harsh (苛刻) word to anyone or about anyone.
Happy and her husband Ben, 70, have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours together working on it. Most of the neighbors watched interestingly as Ben doubled the size of their garden. As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben’s beans, we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market, Happy could be seen picking beans in her back yard.
Last month, Happy and Ben invited most of the neighborhood over for an “all-day food fest”. We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn’t know what was about to take place.
By 9:00 am, there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra, and squash. By 10:00 am, there was lots of laughter. We shared a lot of stories. By five o’clock, everyone was a little drunk from the wine and beer. After dinner, we played games. As we were leaving, Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with the bounty(收成)of the day, already packaged and frozen. What a delightful gift!
Well, the point wasn’t so much about the food. The true gift was a day of friends enjoying one another’s company. None of it would have happened if it had been for Happy and Ben’s garden. Now they have a blog about gardening in case we decided to plant a garden. And I am so proud of my tomato plants!
( )48. According to paragraph 2, people wish they also had a garden so that_______.

A. To ask them to attend a birthday party.
B. To help them get to know each other.

D. To let them enjoy what they grew in the garden.
( )50. What did the writer most probably think of the time he spent in the garden?

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbours.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big par ties for their new neighbours.
It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.
People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.
51. Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they ________.
A. want to be as rich as their neighbours
B. want others to know or to think that they are rich
C. Don’t want others to know they are rich
D. want to be happy
52. It can be inferred (推斷) from the story that rich people like to ________.
A. live outside New York City B. live in New York City
C. live in apartments D. have many neighbours
53. Arthur Momand used the name “Jones” in his series of short stories because “Jones”
is ________.
A. an important name B. a popular name in the United States
C. his neighbour’s name D. not a good name
(D)
Everybody may have seen the film “Death on the Nile (n. 尼羅河)”, but nobody can imagine that the writer of the story, Agatha Christie, saved a baby in a most unusual way.
In June 1977, a baby girl became seriously ill in Deleville. Doctors there were unable to find out the cause of her illness, so she was sent to a famous hospital in London, where there were many excellent doctors. The baby was so seriously ill that a team of doctors hurried to examine the baby without delay. The doctors, too, were puzzled by the baby’s illness and they also became discouraged. Just then a nurse asked to speak to them. “I think the baby is suffering from thallium (n. 鉈) poisoning. ” said the nurse. “A few days ago, I read a story ‘A Pale Horse’ written by Agatha Christie. Someone uses thallium poison, and all the symptoms are written in the book. They are exactly the same as the baby’s.” “You’re very good at observing things,” said a doctor, “and you may be right. We’ll carry out some tests and find out whether the cause is thallium poisoning or not.” The tests proved that the baby had indeed been poisoned by thallium. Once they knew the cause, the doctors were able to give her correct treatment. The baby soon got well and was sent back to Deleville. On Sept 4 and 5 this year, the 11th G20 Leaders Summit (峰會(huì)) was held in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province in east China. It was a big success.
G20 is made up of the world’s most important 20 economies (經(jīng)濟(jì)體)—the European Union and 19 countries. Both developed countries like the US and Germany, and developing countries like Brazil and China are members of it. Every year, the G20 members get together and talk about the world economic events. For example, after the financial crisis (金融危機(jī)) in 2008, they agreed that the International Monetary Fund (IMF, 國(guó)際貨幣基金組織) could give money to countries in need. Other events also included making sure poorer areas have enough food and good development.
It was the first ever G20 summit to be hosted in China. The logo of the summit looks like a bridge. “I got the idea from the old bridges at the West Lake,” said the designer Yuan Youmin. “Bridges bring people and places together in many different ways, just as the G20 makes east and west get together.”
Chinese food also pleased many foreign guests with its culture. At the welcome dinner to the member leaders there was one famous dish—Dongpo Rou. Song Dynasty poet Su Dongpo made the dish first. Su once lived in Hangzhou.
One main topic of the summit this year is to develop goals and plans of creative growth for G20 members. China itself is developing its creative ability in recent years. It is not easy to host such a summit, but China has made a great contribution (貢獻(xiàn)) to the G20 by bringing out a new future.
