Smoking in indoor public places including public working places, public transport vehicles and some other special outdoor working places has been banned(禁止)in China since January 2011. Let’s look at the following advantages of banning smoking.
First, banning smoking will not only help in saving smokers from health problems and diseases, but will also be good for passive(被動(dòng))smokers. When the smoker is smoking in a restaurant, the people around him are sure to breathe in the smoke and suffer from the diseases an active smoker gets. If smoking is banned, spread of these diseases can be controlled.
Next, banning smoking will put stress on smokers to give up. Since a smoker is prevented from smoking, he will learn how to live without smoking for long hours. When a smoker doesn’t smell or see anybody around him smoking, it might reduce his wish to smoke too. As a result, people have to give up smoking.
Smoking in public places influences non-smokers to start smoking, especially adolescents. When teens see people around them smoking, they will follow them easily. Thus the number of teen smokers will increase. Also asthma(哮喘)and other problems are often seen in children living around smokers. So if it is banned, these places will become safe for children and teenagers.
Smoking should be banned to increase work productivity(生產(chǎn)率). Employees(雇員)who smoke usually take breaks to smoke while working. So the number of hours they put in their work is smaller.
If you see from the environment point of view, smoking should be banned. Smoking causes air pollution. If it is banned, it will help keep the environment from getting worse.
38. ________doesn’t belong to a non-smoking place.
A.A field B. A hospital C. A library D.A restaurant
39. The second paragraph mainly wants to tell us ______.
A. banning smoking is good for restaurants
B. banning smoking is good for non-smokers
C. banning smoking is good for spread of diseases
D. banning smoking is good for active smokers and passive smokers

A. men B. women C. adults D. teenagers

I grew up in New Hampshire, a small town in South Canada, where in my father’s words for the seasons were “Spring, Summer, Fairtime and Winter!” At that time, a week-long fair was held in the town every autumn. Thousands of people from other towns came to sell and buy things. It was the busiest time of the year.
When “Fairtime” came, my grandma became the most “useful” and busiest person of the family. Grandma was a kind, well-educated old lady. She was good at cooking. All her relatives liked the food she cooked. During “Fairtime”, they would come to live in her house and have meals there. Grandma was always happy to look after them.
Year after year, many people moved to big cities. There was no longer “Fairtime”. Grandma became very old and was gradually(逐漸地) going blind. My parents and I moved to live with Grandma in her house. We did our best to make her day-to-day life as comfortable as possible. I was at high school then.
What I often did at home was to help Grandma with the daily newspaper’s crossword puzzle.(填字游戲) However, she didn’t look happy. She often sat in her room for hours, without saying a word.
To attract people to move back, the Town Hall decided to reopen the fair. One day, when I came back from school, I saw Grandma wearing her glasses, washing the dishes in the kitchen. With a big smile on her face, she looked a lot much younger. She told me that her two nieces(侄女)would come. “They said the food I cooked was very delicious and they want to stay in my house again,” Grandma said happily. “They will stay here for one week and we can have a big party. That must be the busiest week I’ve had in years!”
I suddenly realized that Grandma didn’t want to be looked after. She wanted to be “useful”, appreciated and helpful.
42. What was mentioned to make Grandma happy in the passage?
A. My parents moved to live with her. B. The writer did the crossword puzzle with her.
C. Her two nieces would come. D. We tried to make her live comfortably.
43. Which is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Grandma preferred looking after others to being looked after.
B. The fair usually lasts for about a week.
C. Grandma was kind and educated very well.
D. Grandma liked to stay in the room for hours without saying a word.
44. What does the underlined word“appreciated” mean?

Mayme Clayton collected books, magazines and letters written by African Americans. Her son, Avery Clayton, thought her collection was important. Unlike most books, these were rare and hard to find. They were written by writers who helped shape African American culture.
One book in the collection was written by Phillis Wheatley. Wheatley was a slave (奴隸)who wrote poetry. She was the first African American to publish a book. Wheatley herself signed (簽名) the book in the Claytons’ collection. No one else owns a copy signed by Phillis Wheatley.
By the time she passed away at age 83, Mrs. Clayton had more than 30,000 books by or about black people. Her collection also includes papers about slaves, photos, movies, sheet music, and personal letters by black leaders and artists. It is one of the biggest personal collections of African American history and culture in the United States.
Avery Clayton’s dream was to create a museum for his mother’s treasures. Scholars say that Mrs. Clayton’s collection is very important. Without her work, part of African American heritage (遺產(chǎn)) would have been lost. “We didn’t know these things existed(存在),” a man from California’s library says.
The collections new home is likely to be in Culver City, California. Part of Avery Clayton’s dream is to share the cultural riches(財(cái)富) his mother collected with others. He especially wants kids to have a chance to see the collection. “ At present African American culture is being explained by pop culture,” he says, “ It’s important to offer a more complete picture.”
