1911年辛亥革命成功后，決定采用國際通行的公歷，于是將農(nóng)歷元旦改為“春節(jié)”，而把公歷的1月1日稱為元旦。新中國成立之時，開始正式使用“公元紀年法”，把每年公歷的1月1日定為元旦。
現(xiàn)在，世界上大多數(shù)國家把每年1月1日作為元旦，因為他們多采用了國際通行的公歷。但也有一些國家和民族由于本地的歷法傳統(tǒng)及宗教信仰、風俗習慣、季節(jié)氣候的不同，因而他們的元旦日期也不一樣，這也使得這個世界多姿多彩，更顯民族的特色
