My husband and I had been married nearly twenty-two years when I acquired Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a disorder where my immune(免疫的) system responded to a virus by producing painful blisters. Although my long-term evaluation was good, I, who had been so fiercely independent, rapidly became absolutely helpless.
My husband, Scott, stepped up to the plate, taking care of kids and cooking dinners. He also became my personal caretaker, applying the medicine to all of my blisters because my hands couldn’t do the job. Needless to say, I had negative emotions, bouncing from embarrassment to shame caused by total reliance on someone other than myself.
I recovered from my illness, but I couldn’t seem to recover from the thought that I loved my husband less than he loved me. This seeming distinction in our love continued to annoy me for the year following my illness.
Then recently Scott and I went on a long bike ride. He’s an experienced cyclist; I’m quite the green hand. At one point with a strong headwind and sharp pain building in my tired legs, I really thought I couldn’t go any further. Seeing me struggle, Scott pulled in front of me and yelled over his shoulder, “Stay close behind me.” As I followed his steps, I discovered that my legs quit burning and I was able to catch my breath. My husband was pulling me along—again.
I pray my husband will always be strong and healthy. But if he should ever become the struggling one, whether on a bike ride or with an illness, I trust I’ll be ready to call out to him, “Stay close behind me—my turn to pull you along.”

Tudor Cobalas nearly crashed his car while driving and texting on his phone. It was this near-death experience that inspired him to turn the smartphone from a weapon of mass distraction into a tool for safer driving.
Mr. Cobalas developed Safe Drive, an app that rewards drivers for ignoring their phones while driving. Once a driver drives too fast, the app launches a “Release” button on the screen, effectively locking the phone. Driving without checking the phone generates scores that can be turned into shopping discounts in the Safe Drive Marketplace.
It’s a simple idea that has attracted nearly 100,000 users globally and 30 commercial partners. Worldwide, about 1.25 million people die each year as a result of road traffic accidents, according to the World Health Organization. “Smartphone distraction” is blamed for an increasing number of accidents. Drivers using a mobile phone are four times more likely to be involved in a crash. Many parents also want to educate their children, young drivers. That is why a growing number of technology businessmen are trying to handle the problem.
“Although smartphones are rightly blamed for an increase in distracted driving, we wanted to show that smartphones could be used to make drivers better,” says Hari Balakrishnan, chief technology officer of Cambridge Mobile Telematics, a US company that has developed an app called Drive Well.
The app measures all aspects of driving such as hard braking, abrupt acceleration, sharp cornering and speeding. But it also monitors how often drivers are distracted by their phones and generates a “safety score” at the end of each trip. The free app features competition leader boards that enable drivers to compete with their friends, family and colleagues, as well as personalized safer driving tips. Good safety scores can earn drivers discounts on car insurance, Mr. Balakrishnan says.
Last year the company started a competition to find Boston’s safest driver. Nearly 5,000 people have signed up, and 98 have been awarded more than $3,400 in prizes. Data from 40,000 Drive Well app users around the world present its effectiveness, says Mr. Madden.
28. What caused Tudor Cobalas to develop the app Safe Drive?
A. Multi-functions of this app.
B. His desire to make a fortune.
C. Many parents’ worries about teenagers’ driving safety.
D. His own experience about being distracted by his smartphone.
29. What do Safe Drive and Drive Well have in common?
A. They keep a specific record of hard braking.
B. They fail to help decrease the number of traffic accidents.
C. Their users get some scores in the driving process.
D. Their users get money as a reward directly.
30. Which of the following is closest to the meaning of the underlined word “distracted” in paragraph 4 ?
A. Lacking concentration. B. Lacking confidence.
C. Speedy. D. Dangerous.
31. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To present the harmful effects of smartphones in the driving process.
B. To introduce some useful apps that can guarantee our safety.
C. To compare different types of apps concerning driving safety.
D. To show us smartphones can make drivers safer in a way.
D
Scientists have found living organisms trapped in crystals(晶體)that could be 50,000 years old.
The organisms were found in a hot, but beautiful cave system in Naica, Mexico. These ancient life forms can be seen only with a microscope. Penelope Boston, who leads the Astrobiology Institute at NASA, the space agency of the United States, says the ancient microbes were able to live by eating minerals such as iron.
She spoke about the discovery recently at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. If the findings are confirmed, they will show how microbes can survive in extreme conditions. Forty different kinds of microbes and some viruses were found in the underground area. The genetic structures of these organisms are 10 percent different from those of their nearest relatives.
The caves in Naica are 800 kilometers deep. They were once used for mining lead. Before the miners began working in the caves, the area was separated from the surface and the outside world. Some of the caves are as big as the large religious centers built during Europe's Middle Ages. There are crystals covering the walls. The caves are so hot that scientists must wear special clothing to keep cool. The clothing keeps the crystals safe from human germs(病菌)or other damage. Boston said the researchers could only work for about 20 minutes at a time before they had to go to a room that was 38 degrees Celsius to cool down.
NASA officials would not let Boston share her findings with scientific experts before last week's announcement. So scientists could not say much about the findings. But Norine Noonan, a biologist with the University of South Florida, said she believed them. "Why are we surprised?" Noonan asked. "As a biologist, I would say life on Earth is extremely tough and extremely colorful."
Boston is also studying microbes commonly found inside caves in other countries, such as Ukraine and the United States. These microbes appear to be impossible to kill. Boston said they show how difficult life on Earth can be.
32. The existence of the ancient microbes relies on _______.
A. surrounding insects
B. diverse plants
C. eating minerals
D. absorbing air
33. What can we infer about the caves in Naica from the passage?
A. The temperature in the caves is quite low.
B. The caves have been explored since they were formed.
C. The walls are covered by crystals.
D. The environment in the caves is difficult to adapt to.
34. What is the biologist Norine Noonan’s attitude towards the findings?
A. Neutral.
B. Positive.
C. Doubtful.
D. Indifferent.
35. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Living organisms bring hope to scientific research.
B. Scientists Discover 50,000-year-old “super life” in Mexico.
C. Microbes show great power to survive in terrible conditions.
D. Caves provide living environment for living organisms.

Dear Tony,
How’s everything with you? For me everything is fine. And what’s better is that my parents and I are planning a trip to Britain this coming summer holiday! We plan to stay in the UK for about five days. And our schedule only covers three major tourist destinations. The first step will be Cambridge University, where we can take a walk around the campus and have a taste of the academic atmosphere. The London Tower is in the second place of our must-see list as it is the icon of British architecture. Last but not least, taking a cruise trip on the River Thames is a dream for all of us. Do you have any recommendations? Most importantly, I am dying to meet you face to face. Let’s make an appointment, shall we?
Yours,
Tony
根據(jù)第一段第三句“registration(注冊(cè)) is not complete until payment(付款)”可知D選項(xiàng)正確。
23.A。 根據(jù)最后一段 “Participate in both Original AND High Adventure for only $200!” 題干中提到有兩個(gè)人都sign up for(報(bào)名參加)這兩項(xiàng)活動(dòng),故選項(xiàng)A正確。
24.A。 根據(jù)最后一段最后一句“I, who had been so fiercely independent, rapidly became absolutely helpless.” 可知,文章作者曾經(jīng)十分獨(dú)立,但是在得病后變得很無(wú)助,A選項(xiàng) “She lost the previous independence”意為“她失去了之前的獨(dú)立”,符合題干,故A選項(xiàng)正確。B選項(xiàng)“failed to get the medical treatment”意為“沒能得到治療”,C選項(xiàng)“Her marriage was in a terrible state”意為“她的婚姻狀況很糟糕”,D選項(xiàng)“suffered from mental disorder”意為“患有精神病”,均不符合文意,故排除B、C、D。
25.C。 根據(jù)第二段“stepped up to the plate(開始行動(dòng)), taking care of kids and cooking dinners”和 “became my personal caretaker(看護(hù))”可推知作者的丈夫在作者得病后照顧家庭,看護(hù)生病的作者,故選C“Family-centered(顧家的)”。
根據(jù)第四段“Seeing me struggle, Scott pulled(拉) in front of me and yelled over his shoulder, “Stay close behind me(緊緊跟著我).” 和“My husband was pulling me along—again.” 可知,當(dāng)作者進(jìn)行長(zhǎng)途的騎車運(yùn)動(dòng)時(shí),她的丈夫一路上給她支持和鼓勵(lì),B選項(xiàng) “backed her up all the way”意為“一路上支持她”,符合題干,故B選項(xiàng)正確。A選項(xiàng)“followed her closely”意為“緊跟著她”,C選項(xiàng)“gave in to her depression”意為“屈服于她的沮喪”,D選項(xiàng)“stopped to take care of her leg”意為“停下來(lái)照顧她的腳 ”,均不符合文意,故排除A、C、D。
27.C。 故C選項(xiàng) “Reliance on each other(對(duì)彼此的依賴)”正確。A選項(xiàng)“Strong will”意為“堅(jiān)強(qiáng)的意志”;B選項(xiàng)“Selfless love”意為“無(wú)私的愛”,主題詞為“愛”,不符合文意;D選項(xiàng)“Optimistic attitude to life”意為“樂觀的生活態(tài)度”。
根據(jù)第一段第二句“It was this near-death experience that inspired(啟發(fā);使…有靈感) him to turn the smartphone from a weapon of mass distraction into a tool for safer driving”,這句強(qiáng)調(diào)句里強(qiáng)調(diào)了Tudor Cobalas 開發(fā)Safe Drive 這個(gè)應(yīng)用程序的原因,故D選項(xiàng) “His own experience about being distracted by his smartphone”正確。A選項(xiàng)的“Multi-functions(多功能)”,B選項(xiàng)的“desire to make a fortune(發(fā)財(cái)致富的渴望)”和C選項(xiàng)的“parents’ worries”在文中均未提及,故排除A,B和C。
29.C。 題干問的是Safe Drive和Drive Well應(yīng)用程序的共同點(diǎn),根據(jù)第二段“Driving without checking the phone generates scores”和第五段“generates a safety score”可知C選項(xiàng)正確。根據(jù)第五段“The app measures all aspects of driving such as hard braking”可知,A選項(xiàng)的“keep a specific record of hard braking”只符合應(yīng)用程序Drive Well,故排除選項(xiàng)A ;根據(jù)最后一段“present its effectiveness”可知B選項(xiàng)的“fail to help decrease(沒能幫助減少) the number”與原文不符,故排除B;根據(jù)第二段“generates scores that can be turned into shopping discounts(折扣)”和第五段“Good safety scores can earn drivers discounts on car insurance”可知D選項(xiàng)的`“get money as a reward directly”與原文不符,故排除D。
30.A。 根據(jù)第三段“Smartphone distraction is blamed for(因…被責(zé)備)an increasing number of accidents. Drivers using a mobile phone are four times more likely to be involved in a crash.” 題干里考查 “smartphones are rightly blamed for an increase in distracted driving”中的“distracted”,可由distraction的意義推出A選項(xiàng)“Lacking concentration(注意力不集中)”正確。
由全文內(nèi)容可知,文章主要通過(guò)介紹和駕駛相關(guān)的應(yīng)用程序顯示出智能手機(jī)也能讓駕駛員更加安全地駕駛,并在第一段的“a tool for safer driving”和第四段的“show that smartphones could be used to make drivers better”有所體現(xiàn),故選D。A選項(xiàng)的“present the harmful effects(呈現(xiàn)不良影響)” 與原文不符,故排除A;B選項(xiàng)的“guarantee our safety(確保我們的安全)”在文中沒有體現(xiàn),故排除B;C選項(xiàng)的“compare(對(duì)比)”在文中沒有體現(xiàn),故排除C。
根據(jù)第二段 “the ancient microbes were able to live by eating minerals such as iron”可知,C選項(xiàng)正確。
33.D。 根據(jù)第四段“The caves are so hot that scientists must wear special clothing to keep cool.”和“the researchers could only work for about 20 minutes at a time”可推知,洞穴內(nèi)的環(huán)境很糟糕,不適合進(jìn)入。因此D選項(xiàng)“The environment in the caves is difficult to adapt to(很難適應(yīng))”正確,故選D。選項(xiàng)A中的“low” 與原文不符,故排除A。選項(xiàng)B中的“have been explored since they were formed”意為“自從成形以來(lái)已經(jīng)被探索” 與原文第四段的“Before the miners began working in the caves, the area was separated from(與…隔離) the surface and the outside world.” 選項(xiàng)C中的“The walls are covered by crystals” 在原文第四段的“There are crystals covering the walls”直接表現(xiàn)出來(lái),不屬于推斷出來(lái)的,故排除C。
34.B。 根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段 “she believed them”和她說(shuō)的話“Why are we surprised?”以及 “life on Earth is extremely tough and extremely colorful”可推知,Norine Noonan對(duì)這個(gè)發(fā)現(xiàn)的態(tài)度是正面肯定的,故B選項(xiàng)“Positive(積極的)”正確。
根據(jù)第一段中心段和整篇文章的描述,文章第一段由“Scientists have found living organisms(生物體) trapped in crystals that could be 50,000 years old.” A選項(xiàng)“bring hope to(給…帶來(lái)希望)” 在文中沒有體現(xiàn),故排除A;C選項(xiàng)“show great power to survive” 偏離文章討論的中心,故排除C;D選項(xiàng)“Caves provide living environment for living organisms”沒有點(diǎn)出文章主要討論的這項(xiàng)研究,故排除D。
七選五
36.D。“They rarely get the attention of people(它們很少得到人們的關(guān)注)”與下句“pangolins have recently become the focus of Chinese people(穿山甲最近成了中國(guó)人關(guān)注的焦點(diǎn))”構(gòu)成轉(zhuǎn)折關(guān)系。
37.B。上段提到了兩起吃穿山甲的例子,本段以“Yet this is only the tip of the iceberg(然而這只是冰山一角)”開頭,接著講到更多穿山甲被獵殺。
39.G。G項(xiàng)句意為:“穿山甲鱗片和肉的販賣不斷增長(zhǎng),是它們數(shù)量下降的主要原因”,其中G項(xiàng)meat對(duì)應(yīng)下句pangolin meat is delicious;G項(xiàng) their scales對(duì)應(yīng)第三句pangolin scales have medicinal qualities。
