My First Chemistry Teacher
I will never forget my first chemistry teacher. He was a little man with thick glasses, but he had a strange way of making his classes lively and interesting. And his lessons were not easily forgotten.
I still remember one of my lessons from this teacher. After the students were all in the lab, the teacher brought out three bott[es. One was filled with petrol, one with castor oil and one with vinegar. "Now watch carefully," said the teacher.
He then filled a cup with some of the petrol, some of the castor oil and some of the vinegar. As the students watched him quiet[y, he mixed the three together. After that, he held up one of his fingers and showed it to the class. He then dipped it into the cup. After a few seconds he took his finger out. "Now watch," he said. "Remember, you must do every thing as I do."
He put a finger in his mouth, tasted it and smiled, looking rather pleased. Then he handed the cup around the class of students. Each student dipped a finger into the mixture and sucked it. Instead of smiling, each of them made a face. The mixture tasted terrible.
When the cup was at last returned to the teacher, he said sadly, "I＇ m sorry, none of you watched carefully enough. Yes, I sucked a finger, but the finger I put into my muth was not the one I had dipped into the cup."
It was my first important lesson as a student of chemistry and I never forgot it.

我現(xiàn)在還仍然記得他給我們上的一節(jié)課。在學(xué)生全都進(jìn)入化學(xué)實(shí)驗(yàn)室后，老師拿出三個(gè)瓶子。一個(gè)瓶子裝滿汽油，一個(gè)裝滿篦麻油，還有一個(gè)裝著醋。老師說(shuō)：“現(xiàn)在請(qǐng)仔細(xì)觀察。”
于是他拿山一個(gè)杯子，裝上一點(diǎn)汽油，一點(diǎn)篦麻油和一點(diǎn)醋。當(dāng)學(xué)生們靜靜地瞅著他時(shí)，他把這二種液體攪和在一起。隨后他舉起一個(gè)手指給學(xué)生看，接著把手指伸到杯子里蘸了蘸。幾秒鐘后他把手指拿出來(lái)，說(shuō)：“現(xiàn)在大家瞧著。記住，你們都要照我這樣做�！�
他把一個(gè)手指放進(jìn)嘴里，嘗了嘗，微笑著，顯出一副得得意的樣子。然后把杯子遞給學(xué)生，在全班傳了一圈，每個(gè)學(xué)生都把一個(gè)手指伸入混合液中蘸了蘸，然后放進(jìn)嘴里，吸吮了一下。他們沒(méi)有笑容，而是每個(gè)人都做了個(gè)苦臉。這混合液太難吃了。
當(dāng)這個(gè)杯子最后傳回老師手中時(shí)，他不高興地說(shuō)：“很遺憾，你們沒(méi)有一個(gè)人仔細(xì)觀察我的動(dòng)作。不錯(cuò)，我是吸吮了一個(gè)手指，但是放進(jìn)嘴里的那個(gè)手指并不是我伸進(jìn)杯子里的那個(gè)�！�
這就是我的一節(jié)重要的化學(xué)課，而我一直沒(méi)有忘記這堂課。
