　　There's no suchthing as a free lunch

　　其中我們常常聽說這樣一句話：There's no such thing as a free lunch.（沒有免費的午餐），你知道這句話是怎么來的嗎？

　　在十九世紀(jì)的時候，美國有些酒吧給顧客提供“免費的午餐”。所謂午餐，其實不過是些用來和啤酒一起送出的脆餅；而所謂免費，當(dāng)然不是真的，不買酒喝就沒有餅吃。所以，當(dāng)時有人說：There's no such thing as a free lunch.

　　后來到了二十世紀(jì)七十年代，經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)家弗里德曼 (Milton Friedman)寫的一本書用了這句話做書名。他在別的著作、演講里也多次引用這句話。于是，這句話就又流行了起來。

　　有時，我們不相信會得到一些優(yōu)惠，就可以用這句“弗里德曼名言”。

　　例如：

　　Honeymoon

　　相信大家一定都知道honeymoon吧，honey（蜂蜜）和 moon（月）結(jié)合在一起的意思就是“蜜月”。honeymoon指的是新婚夫婦結(jié)為伉儷的最初一段時光（并非一定是結(jié)婚后的第一個月，雖然很多人都有這樣的錯覺）。愛情經(jīng)過長久的期盼和耕耘，相愛的情侶終于手拉手走到了一起，雙方的感覺能不像蜜一樣甘甜醇美嗎？

　　也有有一種說法認(rèn)為honeymoon這個詞來源于巴比倫的民俗傳統(tǒng)。這個古老的國家一直保留著這樣一個傳統(tǒng)，在女兒出嫁的第一個月，女孩的父親每天都會讓女婿喝mead（蜂蜜酒），以希望后輩們的婚姻永遠(yuǎn)幸福甜蜜。

　　但是，從詞源學(xué)的觀點來看，這種說法是錯誤的。honeymoon 最早出現(xiàn)于16 世紀(jì)，honey 用以喻指新婚的甜蜜，但moon并不是指很多人認(rèn)為的陰歷月份(lunar-based month)，它是一種苦澀的暗示，旨在告誡人們婚姻固然是幸福甜美的，但這種甜蜜就像月亮的盈虧，只是暫時的（因此要十分珍惜才對喔�。�，婚姻更多的意味著雙方要一起肩負(fù)生活的重?fù)?dān)，一起承受人生的酸甜苦辣，一起經(jīng)受生活的風(fēng)風(fēng)雨雨

　　Darling

　　其實darling可能是英語中最流行的昵稱了，也是最古老的詞語之一。早在公元888年，darling就以deorling的形式出現(xiàn)了。darling一詞有多種用法，一般作名詞表示“親愛的人”，作形容詞表示“親愛的；可愛的”，同時darling也可以用來稱呼所愛的人或家庭中的成員，如Darling, fetch me another bonbon, please.（親愛的，請再幫我拿一顆小糖果吧。）darling還可以用作比喻，但經(jīng)常帶有輕微的諷刺意味，表示某人深受一個不大招人喜歡的人或機(jī)構(gòu)的喜愛。比如，Senator is the darling of the oil companies.（參議員是石油公司的寵兒。）

　　盡管用途廣泛，darling的來源卻相當(dāng)簡單。darling源于古英語單詞deor或deore，表示“所愛的人”或“親愛的”，這會讓你很自然的聯(lián)想到今天的dear。詞綴ling表示one who is，所以deorling和今天的darling的意思都是one who is dear.

　　此外，在夫婦之間，除了darling，還可以用sweetheart、pet、dear、love等稱謂。在男女戀人之間經(jīng)常使用honey、baby等帶有感情色彩的詞匯，而一些有了孩子的守舊的老夫妻喜歡互稱mother、father。甚至還有比這個稱呼更傳統(tǒng)的，比如在十九世紀(jì)的小說《傲慢與偏見》中，Bennet夫婦非常正式地互稱對方為Mr. Bennet和Mrs. Bennet。當(dāng)然，夫婦間還可以有許多更隨意更獨特的稱呼，比如Teddy Bear、Honeybun、Sugar Doll 等等。不過，其中的特別含義大概只有他們自己明白了。

　　Teach a fishhow to swim

　　你聽說過有不會游泳的魚嗎？你聽說過魚因不會游泳而淹死的事嗎？如果誰有這樣的擔(dān)憂，就和那個被嘲笑了幾百年的擔(dān)心天會塌下來的杞國人沒什么差別了，必定會成為人們茶余飯后的笑料。

　　作為一種本能，魚兒天生就是會游泳的，完全適應(yīng)水底生活，如果有人想教魚兒how to swim，這和在魯班門前賣弄使斧頭的功夫，在孔老夫子面前賣弄寫文章的本領(lǐng)又有什么差異呢？

　　因此，teach a fish how to swim 的含義就是“班門弄斧”，“在孔夫子面前賣文章”。英語中類似的表達(dá)還有：teach a dog to chase rabbits；show the President where the White House is； teach the Pope how to pray；use Chinese maximsin front of Confucius.
