國(guó)王提出一大筆賞金，看誰(shuí)畫(huà)得出最能代表平靜祥和的意象。很多畫(huà)家將自己的作品送到皇宮，有的畫(huà)了黃昏森林，有的畫(huà)了寧?kù)o的.河流，小孩在沙地上玩耍，彩虹高掛天上，沾了幾滴露水的玫瑰花瓣。
國(guó)王親自看過(guò)每件作品，最后只選出兩件。
第一件作品畫(huà)了一池清幽的湖水，周遭的高山和藍(lán)天鉅細(xì)靡遺倒映在湖面上，天空點(diǎn)綴了幾抹白云，仔細(xì)看的話，還可以看到湖的左邊角落有座小屋，打開(kāi)一扇窗戶，煙囪有炊煙裊裊升起，表示有人在準(zhǔn)備晚餐，菜色簡(jiǎn)單卻美味可口。
第二幅畫(huà)也畫(huà)了幾座山，山形陰暗嶙峋，山峰尖銳孤傲。山上的天空漆黑一片，閃電從烏云中落下，也降下了冰雹和暴雨。
這幅畫(huà)和其它作品格格不入，不過(guò)如果仔細(xì)一看，可以看到險(xiǎn)峻的巖石堆中有個(gè)小縫，里面有個(gè)鳥(niǎo)窩。盡管身旁風(fēng)狂雨暴，小燕子還是蹲在窩里，老神在在。
國(guó)王將朝臣召喚過(guò)來(lái)，將首獎(jiǎng)?lì)C發(fā)給第二幅畫(huà)，他的解釋是：“寧?kù)o祥和，并不是要到全無(wú)噪音、全無(wú)問(wèn)題、全無(wú)辛勤工作的地方才找得到。寧?kù)o祥和的感覺(jué)，能讓人即使身處逆境也能維持心中一片清澄。寧?kù)o的真諦就只有這么一個(gè)�！�

There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures. But there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them.
One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering (adj.高聳的, 杰出的, 激烈的)mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy (adj.絨毛似的, 蓬松的) white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.
The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged ( adj.高低不平的, 崎嶇的)and bare. Above was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled ( vi.翻倒, 滾動(dòng)) a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all.
But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest-in perfect peace.
Which picture do you think won the prize? The king chose the second picture. Do you know why?
"Because,"explained the king, "peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace."
很久以前,曾有一個(gè)國(guó)王向畫(huà)家們懸賞征集一幅最能表現(xiàn)安寧主題的畫(huà)。畫(huà)家們紛紛嘗試。然而國(guó)王看完所有的`畫(huà)后,只挑中了兩幅,他得在二者中擇其一。
第一幅畫(huà)畫(huà)的是一個(gè)寧?kù)o的湖泊。水波不興的湖面就像一面完美的鏡子,為靜靜挺立的群山所環(huán)抱。湖的上方則是白絲絨般的云朵,飄浮于蔚藍(lán)的蒼穹。所有看到此畫(huà)的人無(wú)不稱贊其對(duì)寧?kù)o主題的完美體現(xiàn)。
另一幅畫(huà)畫(huà)的也是群山。但這些山卻崎嶇不平,寸草不生。群山上空是狂怒的天空,電閃雷鳴,暴雨傾盆。在山的一側(cè)還有瀑布翻騰而下,撞擊出白色的水沫。這幅畫(huà)看來(lái)毫無(wú)安寧可言。
但是國(guó)王凝神細(xì)看的時(shí)候,卻發(fā)現(xiàn)瀑布后面巖石的縫隙中有一小叢灌木,一只鳥(niǎo)媽媽已在灌木叢中筑好了自己的巢。在如此狂奔四泄的瀑布旁,鳥(niǎo)媽媽卻安詳?shù)囟俗仓?完全沒(méi)受到打擾。
