An old story goes that once there were four single men, leading very boring lives. None of them were married, or had lovers, or did anything exciting. They just sat around all day and played Mahjong.
故事從四個過著單調(diào)生活的單身漢說起。他們沒有人結(jié)婚，連女朋友都沒有，日子過得無精打采，終日打麻將度過。
One day they played Mahjong from 11 in the morning until 11 at night. During the game, no matter who won, the winning card was always the ’four columns’ card (the card shows four independent, parallel columns in two lines). Even more of a coincidence, it was Nov 11, or 11/11. In order to commemorate the day, they nicknamed it Singles Day.

For breakfast on Singles Day, singles often eat four youtiao (deep-fried dough sticks) representing the four "ones" in "11.11" and one baozi (steamed stuffed buns) representing the middle dot.

Many singles also choose to say goodbye to their single lives on this day. Many attend ’blind date’ parties and many people choose to marry on this day. 一年一度的光棍節(jié)到啦！還是單身的你，準備好怎么慶祝了嗎？或者說，準備好怎么“脫光”（擺脫光棍）了嗎？
這個所謂的“光棍”，在英語中是怎么表達的呢！
最簡單的說法是"single"。雖然“光棍”一詞非常形象且喜感滿滿，但其實說到底就是“單身”嘛。因此平時我們用"single"一詞足以表示“光棍”了。例如：
she remained single all the life. 她一直單身。
此外，還有一個詞也可以表達單身的意思，即bachelordom，是從bachelor一詞發(fā)展來的。 bachelor在這里可不是“學士”的意思哦，而是我們所說的“光棍”、“單身漢”啦，這個詞是指未婚男子，如果是是未婚女子，可以用maiden（少女）一詞。我們知道，“bachelor”還可以表示“獲學士學位的人”。那么，為什么這個詞既是“光棍”又是“學士”的意思呢？有種說法是以前的學校都是男女分校，也就是我們常說的“unise-xual school”，導(dǎo)致學士都是光棍啦！不過究竟是不是這個原因就無從考證啦。例句：

那么，你知道“剩女”怎么說嗎？是3s lady （single, seventies, stuck），即single(單身), stuck(被卡住的), seventies(大多是出生于20世紀70年代) 。
所以，“光棍節(jié)”的英文就是"singles day"或者"bachelors day"了。從語法的角度上講這些都是正確的，但是在西方人心目中day指所有人都可enjoy的節(jié)日，比如christmas day，但是咱們的光棍節(jié)只屬于“光棍們”所以用day表達，有些矛盾，老外也就不明白啥意思了。 他們覺得singles night 更地道一些，因為night會讓老外想到party，singles night不僅解決了day的不妥，而且還包含了光棍節(jié)的主題活動，“光棍節(jié)”一個中國原創(chuàng)的節(jié)日，singles night一個可以讓老外神會的譯法。if you are a single ,enjoy your singles night,說不定你就會遇到你的ta，就可雙宿雙飛嘍say goodbye to your single life。轉(zhuǎn)自：

美國人關(guān)于交友的用詞和我們有些不同。這里的 "he is seeing somebody" 有可能指他剛正開始和某人交往, 也可能指他和對方已經(jīng)交往了一陣子。還有一個美國人常用來形容他們的「感情狀況」的字是"relationship"。到目前為止，我還不能找到一個很貼切的中文來代替它。
不過, 如果例句中的"...but i heard that he is already seeing somebody." 改成
"...but i heard that he is already is a serious relationship with
somebody." 就慘了。因為那表示這個叫ted 的男生不但是「死會」了, 而且是「非常地死會」。各位應(yīng)該可以大致抓到它的意思吧。
2. play hard-to-get 欲擒故縱
a: so she stood you up last night.
a: 結(jié)果, 她昨晚放你鴿子啦?
b: well, i guess she's trying to play hard-to-get.
b: 嗯, 大概想跟我玩「欲擒故縱」的游戲吧!
"stand someone up" 是「放某人鴿子」的意思。
"play hard-to-get" 也可以說成 "play tough-to-get"。
3. hook up 介紹、送作堆
a: hey, how come you've never told me you have a cute sister...
a: 嘿! 你為什么從來沒告訴我你有一個這么漂亮可愛的妹妹?
b: what are you trying to say?
b: 你想說什么呢?
a: well, you can hook me up, maybe?
a: 嗯..也許你可幫我介紹一下?
b: no way.
b: 休想!
"how come?" 是口語上經(jīng)常被用來代替"why"的字, 是「為什么」的意思。但是"how come"
跟"why"的用法是不同的。用"how come"時, 句子的構(gòu)造很接近中文: 如: "how come you didn't call
me last night?" （你為什么昨晚沒打電話給我呢?）。這句話如果換成用"why"就須要用一般的問句型式, 而成 "why
didn't you call me last night?"了。
美國人對于親屬輩份關(guān)系的區(qū)分, 并不像我們那么清楚。這里的 "sister" 可能指「姊姊」, 也可能指「妹妹」，須要另外問才清楚。
"hook up" 是"connection"的意思, 相當于中文里的「介紹、認識」之類的詞,
并不單指男女之間的認識。比如某人正在找份工作, 他的朋友剛好認識比爾蓋茲（billgates）。他就可以跟這位朋友說"hey!
since you're a friend of bill's, why don't you hook me up?" （嘿!
既然你是比爾的朋友, 幫我介紹一下吧!）
4. break up 分手
a: how are bob and pat doing?
a: bob 和pat 近來如何?
b: they broke up last summer.
b: 他們?nèi)ツ晗奶旆珠_了。
"break up" 是「關(guān)系中止」的意思, 不限于男女之間的關(guān)系。"break-up" 是分手的名詞形。如: "they had an ugly break-up." （他們很不愉快地分手了。）
5. date （男女間的）約會; 約會對象
a: dude, did you see that babe over there? i'm dating her.
a: 老兄!看見那邊那個美女沒有? 我正在跟她約會喔!
b: man, you're lucky.
b: 你真是運氣好!
"babe" 是「令人垂涎」的美女或俊男。
「和某人約會」除了用 "date" , 還可以用 "romance"這個字。比如: "beck and ada have been dating for years." 可以說成:"beck and ada have been romancing for
years.", 都是「beck 跟 ada 愛情長跑多年的意思」。
注意名詞的" date" 和 "appointment" 不可混用?quot;appointment" 是男女以外的約會, 如醫(yī)生、工作面談的約。萬一你跟你的醫(yī)生說:"i'd like to have a date with you.",
他可能會眼睛、嘴巴都張得很大。
