Describe a street you know well.

  You should say:

  where it is

what are the main buildings around

  how often you go there

and explain how you feel about this street.

The first place that springs to mind is Nanluoguxiang, in Beijing. It’s one of the most well known streets in the capital of China, with hundreds, if not thousands of tourists every day!

It’s in the centre of Beijing, just north of the Forbidden City and close to the Drum Tower and the Bell Tower. Another place of interest close by is Houhai Lake. I think it’s an old hutong, so most of the buildings around Nanluoguxiang are only one or two stories high and are either shops, restaurants or bars. There are also loads of street vendors selling cheap stuff, often just novelty items for tourists to waste their money on.

I don’t go there very often, in fact I try to avoid Nanluoguxiang if possible as it’s not my scene. It gets far too busy and makes me feel claustrophobic, plus the bars and restaurants are too expensive. On the rare occasions I do go, it is usually to show people who are visiting Beijing and a short time there reminds me why I don’t like it.

Overall, my feelings towards the street are not very positive. When I first went there as a tourist I loved it. I felt like a kid in a candy shop with all the souvenirs, snacks and cool bars with live music. But as someone who lives in Beijing, the idea of going to Nanluoguxiang fills me with dread and I’d much rather spend my time in a less commercialised street or Hutong.

Describe a place that has been polluted.

  You should say:

  where this place is

  why has it been polluted

  what effects is it has

and explain what you think about the pollution.

I grew up near a beautiful lake where my family and I would spend our weekends, swimming, rowing and playing in the water. The lake is just a short drive or cycle ride from the village we lived in, in Southwest England, in an old house with low ceilings and fireplaces in every room.

When I was a small child, my parents would take me to the lake almost every weekend. I would take some bread in a bag so that I could feed the ducks, moorhens and herons that lived on the lake. Once I was old enough to walk all around the lake – which is several miles in diameter – I could visit the waterfalls, the ancient ruins and the woods too.

During my teen years, a local construction company started dumping waste in the land around the lake. They were doing developments nearby and they contaminated the groundwater by mistake, or so they said!

Pollution has changed the lake completely. It is almost unrecognizable as the place I enjoyed as a young child. The ducks and other wild birds no longer live on the lake. Either they’ve died or have found homes elsewhere. The water is murky and sometimes has a slick, oily film on the surface. I think the pollution is a disgrace; that company should be ashamed of what they’ve done to a once beautiful, natural habitat. I wouldn’t like to swim in the lake now, even if I were a duck.

Describe a country you’d like to travel to.

  You should say:

  where it is

when you are going to go there

what you want to do there

and explain why you want to go there.

I have to say it’s always been a dream of mine to go to Egypt, in North Africa. As it’s so far away, I kind of assumed it must cost an arm and a leg to get there and it would be out of reach, but actually a flight doesn’t cost as much as you may think.

Hopefully I can work hard and save up a lot of money and travel there soon. As well as paying for flights, I’ll need some spending money to buy food and souvenirs. My goal is to go either next summer or the summer after that.

I’ve been fascinated by Egypt ever since I was a kid. We learned about the ancient Egyptians in school and even though they died out a long time ago, a lot of the buildings and temples have survived. I’ve seen a lot of Egypt on the TV, in books and on the internet, but I really want to go there and experience the country for myself.

There is so much to tick off the list, but my first stop would definitely be the capital, Cairo. It has the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx, which are symbols of Egypt, as well as Tutankhamen’s tomb. As they are so old, a lot of these landmarks are very mysterious and out of the ordinary.

After Cairo I would like to ride camels in the desert and sail down the Nile river in a boat. It’s one of the longest rivers in the world and would be an unforgettable experience.
