英語短篇美文 1
a group of colleagues got together to visit their old university professor.conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life .offering his guests coffee ,the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and many styles -porcelain,plastic,glass ,some expensive, some exquisite ,telling them to help themselves to the coffee.when all the students had a cup of coffee in hand ,the professor said:if you noticed ,all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up,leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. while it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves ,that is the source of your problems and stress.
indeed, what all of us really want is coffee, not the cup .we consciously go for the best cups, and then we begin eying others cups.so is our life. life is the coffee, the jobs ,money and position in society are the cups. they are just tools to hold our life and the cups cant change the quality of the life we live.
sometimes,by concentrating only on the cup ,we fail to enjoy the coffee god has provided us .god just brews the coffee ,not the cups. so enjoy our coffee!
the happiest people dont have the best of everything, and they just make the best of everything.so love generously !care deeply! live simply! leave the rest to the god !

Betty, the friend who I met in the elementary school is my best friend as it used to be , I still cherish the enjoyable and unforgettable time and our friendship to this day. Despite we are separated from each other for the time being, I can revisit the bittersweet memories at any time, thats enough .
As far as Im concerned, she used to be keen on reading, especially novels------she was crazy in reading so much that she almost forgot to have meals or stayed up all night. There seemed to be a private library her house, which belonged to her.
Few years ago, Betty played various and important roles in my life , such as a teacher , an elder sister , a close friend and so on . She often kept an eye on my daily life , even looked over my shoulder so that I wouldnt do harm to others or myself . When I did something wrong , she got tempered and threatened me:"There will soon be something new in your life." referring to her temper . Her stubbornness leaves a profound impression on me . Once she made up her mind , she was as stubborn as a mule , few people were strong-minded enough to persuade her.
After our graduation , we gradually lose tough with each other . If we were both in the same college , the life would change for the better

Remember the day I borrowed your brand new car and dented it?
I thought youd kill me, but you didnt.
And remember the time I dragged you to the beach,
and you said it would rain, and it did?
I thought youd say, "I told you so." But you didnt.
Do you remember the time I flirted with all the guys to make you jealous, and you were?
I thought youd leave, but you didnt.
Do you remember the time I spilled strawberry pie all over your car rug?
I thought youd hit me, but you didnt.
And remember the time I forgot to tell you the dance was formal and you showed up in jeans?美文
I thought youd drop me, but you didnt.
Yes, there were lots of things you didnt do.
But you put up with me, and loved me, and protected me.
There were lots of things I wanted to make up to you when you returned from Vietnam.
But you didnt.

I remember quite clearly now when the story happened. The autumn leaves were floating in 1)measure down to the ground, recovering the lake, where we used to swim like children, under the sun was there to shine. That time we used to be happy. Well, I thought we were. But the truth was that you had been 2)longing to leave me, not daring to tell me. On that precious night, watching the lake, vaguely 3)conscious, you said: “Our story is ending.”
The rain was killing the last days of summer. You had been killing my last breath of love, since a long time ago. I still don’t think I’m gonna make it through another love story. You took it all away from me. And there I stand, I knew I was going to be the one left behind. But still I’m watching the lake, vaguely conscious, and I know my life is ending.
英語短篇美文 6
There is so much I have not been, so much I have not seen.
I have not thought and have not done or felt enough—the early sun, rain and the seasonal delight of flocks of ducks and geese in flight, the mysteries of late-at-night. I still need time to read a book, write poems, paint a picture, look at scenes and faces dear to me. There is something more to be of value—something I should find within myself—as peace of mind, patience, grace and being kind. I shall take and I shall give, while yet, there is so much to live for—rainbows, stars that gleam, the fields, the hills, the hope, the dream the truth that one must seek.
I’ll stay here—treasure every day and love the world in my own way!
英語短篇美文 7
It is cold, so bitter cold, on this dark, winter day in 1942. But it is no different from any other day in this Nazi concentration camp. I stand shivering in my thin rags, still in disbelief that this nightmare is happening. I am just a young boy. I should be playing with friends; I should be going to school;
I should be looking forward to a future, to growing up and marrying, and having a family of my own. But those dreams are for the living, and I am no longer one of them. Instead, I am almost dead, surviving from day to day, from hour to hour, ever since I was taken from my home and brought here with tens of thousands other Jews. Will I still be alive tomorrow? Will I be taken to the gas chamber tonight?
英語短篇美文 8
Friday-the Thirteenth has long been considered extremely unlucky because it has some bad associations which came from mythology, tale of the Bible, and the customs and habits. According to the Bible, the Lord God created the first man,Adam. Then he took a rib from Adams body and out of it created the first woman, Eve. It was said that Adam was created on a Friday and it was on Friday that Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, and on a Friday they died.
Friday was also the common day in England for executing criminals , for which it was sometimes known as Hanging Day.
From the old Norse myth people got the idea that 13 people sitting at a table to have a dinner was unlucky. And this superstition was confirmed by the last supper of Christ and his disciples. Bible tells us that Christ sat down with his 12 disciples, which made up the number 13, at the last supper when Judas, one of the 12 disciples , sold his master for thirty pieces of silver. Christ was killed by nailing on the cross the following day on a Friday.

Perhaps it is the dream of everyone to be a good student at school, but quite a few students feel at a loss on how to make it. In my opinion, it is rather easy
if you can act on the following points.
First of all, make full use of your time and work hard. Don’t put off till tomorrow what should be done today, as time past will never come back. The fast developing society requires adequate knowledge, which presses us to spare no efforts to study. Of course, your hard work will be rewarded one day.
Secondly, use your own head and present your point of view. Credulous(輕信的)attitude will only make you take anything for granted. With your own judgment you will be able to tell right from wrong and set up your own theory.
Thirdly, set aside enough time for relaxation, entertainment, etc. don’t ignore the harm of all work and no play. Proper sports will build up your body and improve the efficiency of your studying.
To be a good student is easier said than done, for it needs a student’s consistent efforts. But nothing is difficult to a man if he puts his heart into it.

Where do you like to live, in the city or in the country?
Most cities are centers of economy, trade, transportation or culture. With the development of economy and society, more and more people have flooded into the cities, which make the scale of the cities larger and larger. Surely, it is very convenient for shopping, education, business and so on. But it also has many disadvantages: the large population makes it crowded in each corner of the city; the big factories, too many cars, buses and trucks pollute the clean air; too much noise can make people mad. To live in the city, one even can’t get enough room for living.
To live in the country is another thing. You can breathe the fresh air cheerfully, own a spacious house with a big backyard, and relax yourself in quietness. But when you want to go shopping, or take your child to school, perhaps you will complain about its inconvenient transportation, its remoteness…I am an ordinary person. I am always longing for the peaceful idyllic life of the countryside.

There are people in the world who love the bloom of the spring, some love summer in summer, some love the fruitful autumn, and I love the heavy snow in winter.
The window is still under a heavy snow drifting profusely and disorderly. I opened the door, the whole world is a vast expanse of whiteness, snow, as if into a fairy tale world, snow like flocks of elves, the earth covered with a drop from the clouds, coat. I stand in the snow, gently catch a snowflake, cool, and it has six petals, sparkling, gradually it is in my hand into water, my palms get wet.
Winter is the most happy snowman, class, my classmates and I play in the snow, I want an idea: "we have a snowball fight." My classmates disagreed. Later I made snowmen together. We worked in the division of labor. I was responsible for doing the snowball well. He was responsible for putting carrots, branches and straw hats in various parts of the snowman.
Ah! Beautiful winter, you like a picture can not be seen, not finished.

Libra the Scales is a Spring constellation, and can be best viewed in the night sky during the month of May.
The Constellation Libra-The Scales
Mythology: Libra - The Scales
During the Golden Age, the legendary first period of human existence, Astraea, the Roman Goddess of justice, lived on the earth, mingling among the many mortal beings. In the pans of her great golden scales, she heavily weighed the good and evil deeds of men and women, thereby deciding their many different fates. As Astraea became increasingly offended by the wickedness of her citizens, she decided to flee from the corrupt civilization, and returned to the heavens, joining Demeter as the constellation of the Virgin Goddess. Astraea abandoned civilization so hurriedly that she left behind her golden scales of justice. The Romans, in fear of her judgment, created the constellation of Libra from the ancient Scorpion"s claws so that The Scales would always be nearby in the sky.

The birth of Tommy, a healthy, beautiful son, was an event for celebration, and as time went by, it seemed as though every day brought another reason to celebrate the gift of Tommy’s life. He was sweet, thoughtful, fun-loving and a joy to be around.
One day when Tommy was about five years old, he and Debbie were driving to the neighborhood mall. As is the way with children, out of nowhere, Tommy asked, “Mom, how old were you when I was born?”
“Thirty-six, Tommy. Why?” Debbie asked, wondering what his little mind was contemplating.
“What a shame!” Tommy responded.
“What do you mean?” Debbie inquired, more than a little puzzled. Looking at her with love-filled eyes, Tommy said, “Just think of all those years we didn’t know each other.

Nasrudin is walking past a cave when he sees a yogi, deep in meditation, and he asks the yogi what he is searching for. The yogi says: I study the animals and have learned many lessons from them that can transform a mans life.
A fish once saved my life, Nasrudin replies. If you teach me everything you know, I will tell you how it happened.
The Yogi is astonished; only a holy man could be saved by a fish. And he decides to teach Nasrudin everything he knows. When he has finished, he says to Nasrudin: Now that I have taught you everything, I would be proud to know how a fish saved your life.
Very simple, says Nasrudin, I was almost dying of hunger when I caught it and, thanks to that fish, I had enough food for three days.

I like the subtle fresh green budding from the branches of the tree -- the herald(先驅(qū)) of spring, ushering in(領(lǐng)進(jìn)) the dawn...
I like the subtle flow of cloud that makes the sky seem even more vast, azure(蔚藍(lán)的) and immense...
I like the subtle wind. In spring, it steals a kiss on my cheek; in autumn, it caresses my face; in summer, it brings in cool sweet smell; in winter, it carries a crisp chilliness(寒冷,嚴(yán)寒) ...
I like the subtle taste of tea that last long after a sip. The subtle bitter is what it is meant to be...
I like the subtle friendship that does not hold people together. In stead, an occasional greeting spreads our longings far beyond...
I like the subtle longing for a friend, when I sink deeply in a couch, mind wandering in memories of the past...
Love should also be subtle, without enslaving(束縛) the ones fallen into her arms. Not a bit less nor a bit more...
Subtle friendship is true; subtle greetings are enough; subtle love is tender; subtle longing is deep; subtle wishes come from the bottom of your heart...
英語短篇美文 18
When times become difficult (and you know they sometimes will), remember a moment in your life that was filled with joy and happiness. Remember how it made you feel, and you will have the strength you need to get through any trial. When life throws you one more obstacle than you think you can handle, remember something you achieved through perseverance and by struggling to the end.
In doing so, youll find you have the ability to overcome each obstacle brought your way. When you find yourself drained and depleted of energy, remember to find a place of sanctuary and rest. Take the neccessary time in your own life to dream your dreams and renew your energy, so youll be ready to face each new day. When you feel tension building, find something fun to do.
Youll find that the stress you feel will dissipate and your thoughts will become clearer. When youre faced with so many negative and draining situations, realize how minuscule problems will seem when you view your life as a whole--and remember the positive things.
英語短篇美文 19
Most of us who have ever cleaned a house would be much happier if there were less dust.
However, without dust there would be less rainfall and sunsets would be less beautiful.
Rain is formed when water molecules in the air collect around particles of dust. When the collected water becomes heavy enough the water droplet falls to the earth as rain. Thus water vapor could be much less likely to turn to rain without the dust particles.
The water vapor and dust particles also serve to reflect the rays of the sun. At sunrise and sunset, when the sun is below the horizon, the dust and water vapor molecules reflect the longer, red, wavelengths of light such that we can see them for more time (starting earlier in the case of sunrise and lasting longer in the case of sunset) than any of the other wavelengths. The more dust particles in the air the more colorful the sunrise or sunset.

Looking back along the river of history, we may find that harmony used to exist between people and nature. At that time nature was pure field to be ploughed, sown and harvested. Man respected nature and was one part of nature.
It seems that people today are masters of natureg Nature is torn into pieces. While we are disrupting(破壞) the order of the natural world, we are the ultimate victims, for nature is seeking its revenge(報復(fù)). Disappearing forests, drying rivers, polluted soil and worsening climate have punished greedy human beings. We have taken too much from nature, and given back too little.
Looking forward to the future, when we gain reasoning, when we remember the deep interdependent relationship between people and nature, when citizens of the world work persistently to protect nature, then nature will be our friend instead of our slave or servant. Sure, people can live in harmony with nature, with commitment, hard work and new technology.

Self-talk is a software, which when properly loaded onto our mind directs ourselves for better results and a healthy mind. Actually many times in our life, we find others advising us to do better in studies, sports, life etc. We usually get bugged by these people and blank our ears out of their constructive suggestions. It is because it doesnt come from within us.
And when something comes from within you, you always try your best to do justice to it. Self-talk can thus ameliorate our status. Each one of us has some good points and some bad ones. Though we hardly admit in pubic, we know in our mind that we could do better in some areas of our personal landscape. This get better attitude can be converted into a practical reality using self-talk.
英語短篇美文 23
To love you is to daydream of you often, think of you so much, speak of you proudly, and miss you terribly when we are apart.
To love you is to cherish the warmth of your arms, the sweetness of your kiss, the friendliness of your smile, the loving sound in your voice, and the happiness we share.
To love you is to never forget the adversity we have overcome, the tears we have shed, the plans we have made, the problems we have solved, and the pain of separation.
To love you is to remember joyfully the days we made memorable, the moments that will live forever in our hearts, the dreams we hope for, the feelings we have for each other, the caresses and touches of love, and the exhilaration of love that fills our hearts.
To love you is to need you, want you, hold you, and know you as no one else can.
To love you is to realize that life without you would be no life at all...
That‘s a little of what it‘s like to be in love with you!

In a calm sea every man is a pilot. But all sunshine without shade, all pleasure without pain, is not life at all. Take the lot of the happiest - it is a tangled yarn. Bereavements and blessings, one following another, make us sad and blessed by turns. Even death itself makes life more loving. Men come closest to their true selves in the sober moments of life, under the shadows of sorrow and loss.
In the affairs of life or of business, it is not intellect that tells so much as character, not brains so much as heart, not genius so much as self-control, patience, and discipline, regulated by judgment.I have always believed that the man who has begun to live more seriously within begins to live more simply without. In an age of extravagance and waste, I wish I could show to the world how few the real wants of humanity are.To regret ones errors to the point of not repeating them is true repentance. There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self.

New Orleans is the birthplace of jazz. It started among the big brass bands of the citys black ghettos at the end of the 19th century. heres what will happen. the oak standing on a hillside is exposed to every storm and gale. as a result its roots plunge deep into the earth and spread in every direction, even wrapping themselves around giant boulders. at times it may seem the tree isnt growing fast enough—but the growth is happening underground. its as if the roots know they must ported the tree from the threatening elements.

Whether you are thinking about your personality or your life in general, success means focusing on the here-and-now. While it is important to acknowledge the choices and experiences which resulted in you being where you are today, it is equally important to not allow yourself to become so caught up in thoughts of the past that the present day passes you by.
Self-motivation is the key to ensuring that you do not continue repeating the same mistakes. You may have had one or more errors in judgment which led you to take the wrong path, or to make mistakes that were not in your best interest. You can acknowledge this without rehashing them over and over again in your mind, and simply be determined to make different, better decisions today.

Like the tempest she shakes the earth beneath us and sky above us.” The tired and the weary say, “Beauty is of soft whisperings. She speaks in our spirit. Her voice yields to our silences like a faint light that quivers in fear of the shadow.” But the restless say,” We have heard her shouting among the mountains, and with her cries came the sound of hoofs, and the beating of wings and the roaring of lions.”

We often close ourselves off when traumatic events happen in our lives; instead of letting the world soften us, we let it drive us deeper into ourselves. We try to deflect the hurt and pain by pretending it doesn’t exist, but although we can try this all we want, in the end, we can’t hide from ourselves. We need to learn to open our hearts to the potentials of life and let the world soften us.
Whenever we start to let our fears and seriousness get the best of us, we should take a step back and re-evaluate our behavior. The items listed below are six ways you can open your heart more fully and completely.

Sitting on a grassy grave, beneath one of the windows of the church, was a little girl. With her head bent back she was gazing up at the sky and singing, while one of her little hands was pointing to a tiny cloud that hovered like a golden feather above her head.
The sun, which had suddenly become very bright, shining on her glossy hair, gave it a metallic luster, and it was difficult to say what was the color, dark bronze or black. So completely absorbed was shi in watching the cloud to which her strange song or incantation and went towards her. Im not sure when I first fell in love with you... I guess it could have been as early as that first time we held each other, or the first time I realized that you kind of liked me, too...
Im not sure; I just remember thinking of you more and more and getting less and less done in the process!
I remember wanting you to stay so badly - and being so thrilled at the thought.
I remember praying that it was you whenever the phone would ring, but at the same time hoping it wasnt; because I didnt know how in the world I was going to sound romantic and impressive when what I felt was anxious and tongue-tied...
Sometimes it still amazes me - how I get so anxious and thrilled and thoughtful about you; I guess maybe its because I just keep falling wonderfully in love with you... over and over again.

One morning a man was crossing a narrow bridge when he saw a fisherman on the shady bank of the deep, smooth river under him,so he stopped to watch him quietly.
After a few minutes, the fisherman pulled his line in.There was a big,fat fish at the end of it.
The fisherman took it off the hook and threw it back into the water.
Then he put his hook and line in again. After a few more minutes he caught another big fish.Again he threw it back into the river. Then, the third time,he caught a small fish.He put it into his basket and started to get ready to go.The man on the bridge was very surprised,so he spoke to the fisherman. He said,"Why did you throw those beautiful, big fish back into the water, and keep only that small one?"
The fisherman looked up and answered,"Small fryingpan."

Of course, since every one of us has room for improvement, this can also mean if you don’t change yourself, then you can’t be responsible for changing your situation in life. You can never see any improvement in your life if you stick to your comfort zone.
We all need a healthy dose of normal stress in our lives, after all. We can only see what we’re really capable of if we make the effort to go over our preconceived limits. Don’t limit the challenges you encounter in life - challenge the limits that your “l(fā)izard brain” crafted instead:

The first snow came. How beautiful it was, falling so silently all day long, all night long, on the mountains, on the meadows, on the roofs on the living, on the graves of the dead! All white save the river, that marked its course be a winding black line across the landscape; and the leafless tress, that against the leaden sky now revealed more fully the wonderful beauty and intricacies of their branches.
What silence, too, came with the snow, and what seclusion! Every sound was muffled, every noise changed to something soft and musical. No more tramping hoofs, no more rattling wheels! Only the chiming of sleigh-bell, beating as swift and merrily as the hearts of children. (118 words) From Kavanagh By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

We all know what that twinge of anxiety feels like. We know how fear feels in our bodies: the tension in our necks, the tightness in our stomachs, etc. We can practice leaning into these feelings of discomfort and let them show us where we need to go.
The initial impulse is to run away — to try and suppress these feelings by not acknowledging them. When we do this, we close ourselves off to the parts of our lives that we need to experience most. The next time you have this feeling of being truly uncomfortable, do yourself a favor and lean into the feeling. Act in spite of the fear.

Under the scorching sun, an old man sat by the bank staring at the buoy on the river. From dawn to dusk he still got nothing in his hands. However, the old man was happy at ease. I felt so puzzled about it.
The old man said with a smile,”I’m the fish and the fish is me, I’m fishing and I’m also being fished; like playing chess, the fish and I have such an equal stamina that I have a wonderful time.” At this point, an urchin threw a stone into the water. A circle of ripples wafted over. The old man said, “The wind rises.”
Life is a chess game while happiness is devotion.

The four constellations of Aquila, Aquarius, Capricornus, and Delphinus lie relatively close to each other in a region of the sky which is almost devoid of bright showpiece deep sky objects. Aquarius and Capricornus lie away from the main body of the Milky Way, and mostly contain faint galaxies with only a few star clusters and nebulae. Aquila and Delphinus, on the other hand, lie right along the Milky Way and contain some fine examples of planetary and dark nebulae. Even though there are only four Messier objects in this entire region, there are still enough deep sky targets to keep an astronomer busy on a summer night.
