Weifang is famous as “the capital of kites”, with a history of nearly 2,400 years in flying kites. Legend has it that Mozi—the ancient Chinese philosopher—spent three years making the first kite of the world right in Weifang, but the kite fell and broke on its first day of flying. It is also believed that the kite was invented by the ancient Chinese carpenter Luban. It is said that his kite was made of wood and bamboo, and flied for three days before falling on the ground.
