口渴的烏鴉
《The Crow and The Pitcher》
A crow felt very thirsty. He looked for water everywhere. Finally, he found a pitcher.
But there was not a lot of water in the pitcher. His beak could not reach it. He tried again and again, but still could not touch the water.
When he was about to give up, an idea came to him. He took a pebble and dropped it into the pitcher. Then he took another and dropped it in.
Gradually, the water rose, and the crow was able to drink the water.
一只烏鴉口渴了,到處找水喝。終于,他找到了一個大水罐。
然而,水罐里面的水并不多,他的尖嘴夠不到水面,他試了一次又一次,都沒有成功。

"I only touched it lightly," he said, "and the nasty thing stung me."
"It stung you because you only touched it lightly," his mother told him." Next time you touch a nettle grasp it as tightly as you can. Then it wont sting you at all."

I do not know who wrote those words, but I have always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want to make it. We can take the mysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just as a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.
We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest. If our seed is poor and full of weeds, we reap a useless crop. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.
I want the future to be better than the past. I don’t want it contaminated by the mistakes and errors with which history is filled. We should all be concerned about the future because that is where we will spend the remainder of our lives.
The past is gone and static. Nothing we can do will change it. The future is before us and dynamic. Everything we do will affect it. Each day brings with it new frontiers, in our homes and in our business, if we only recognize them. We are just at the beginning of the progress in every field of human endeavor.

In 1899, when Einstein studied at the Swiss Federal University of Technology in Zurich, his tlltor was Minkevsky, a mathematician.
1899年,愛因斯坦在瑞士蘇黎世聯(lián)邦理工大學(xué)就讀時,他的導(dǎo)師是數(shù)學(xué)家明可夫斯基。
Once Einstein asked Minkevsky, "How can a person, like me, leave his distinct footprints on the road of life and make an outstanding contribution in the scientific field?" It was a "sophisticated" problem. Minkevsky said that he had to think about it better and then gave him an answer.

Three days later, Minkevsky told Einstein that the answer was coming! He pulled Einstein to walk toward a building site and straight set foot on the cement ground that the construction workers had just paved.

He said, "I never memorize and reflect what dictionaries and manuals carry, for my brain only memorize those things that are not included in books." It was such a reason that Einstein left his deep sparkling footprints in the history of science.

A boy found an eagles egg and he put it in the nest of a prairie chicken. the eagle hatched and thought he was a chicken. he grew up doing what prairie chicken do-scratching at the dirt for food and flying short distances with a noisy fluttering of wings. it was a dreary life. gradually the eagle grew older and bitter. one day he and his prairie chicken friend saw a beautiful bird soaring on the currents of air, high above the mountains.
"oh, i wish i could fly like that!" said the eagle. the chicken replied, "dont give it another thought. thats the mighty eagle, the king of all birds-you could never be like him!" and the eagle didnt give it another thought. he went on cackling and complaining about life. he died thinking he was a prairie chicken. my friends, you too were born an eagle. the creator intended you to be an eagle, so don’t listen to the prairie chickens!

A hardworking shopkeeper drove his donkey to the market to buy salt. On their way home, they had to cross a stream. The donkey was very tired, and he slipped on a rock and fell into the water.
To the donkey’s surprise, his load was now much lighter. The water had washed away almost all of the salt. The shopkeeper took the donkey back to the market and bought even more salt than before. This time when they reached the stream, the donkey fell into the water on purpose.
The shopkeeper saw through the donkey’s trick. He returned to the market and bought sponges instead of salt.
When they reached the stream, the donkey used his trick again and fell into the water. But this time the trick was on him. The sponges became heavy with water and the weight of his load greatly increased.
“I hope you’ve learned your lesson,” the shopkeeper said to the donkey. “If you use a trick to avoid work, you will just end up with more work in the end.”

After the farmer died, the sons began to dig carefully around the vines. Every day, they woke up early and worked until night. "We have to dig everywhere and find the treasure!" they said.
The two sons dug all summer, but they didnt find the treasure. They were tired and sad. They sat down near the fields and talked one day.
"Maybe our father was only dreaming," said the older son. The younger son was looking at the vineyards. The vines were full of big, juicy grapes. Suddenly, he understood. "Brother, this great harvest is our treasure!"
The older brother looked at the vines. "Youre right! Our father has taught us a wonderful lesson: Hard work brings great rewards."
