  Science and Technology

There is a difference between science and technology. _______(46) Science has to do with discovering the facts and relationships between observable phenomena in nature and with establishing theories that serve to organize these facts and relationships; technology has to do with tools, techniques, and procedures for applying the findings of science. _______ (47)

Progress in science excludes the human factor. Scientists, who seek to understand the universe and know the truth within the highest degree of accuracy and certainty, cannot pay attention to their own or other peoples likes or dislikes or to popular ideas about the fitness of things.

_______ (48) But even an unpleasant truth is more than likely to be useful; besides, we have the choice of refusing to believe it! But hardly so with technology; we do not have the choice of refusing to hear the sound produced by a supersonic (超音速的) aircraft flying overhead; we cannot refuse to breathe polluted air. _______ (49) The purpose of technology is to serve people-people in general, not merely some people; and future generations, not merely those who presently wish to gain advantage for themselves.

_______ (50) Many people blame technology itself for widespread pollution, resource depletion (枯竭) and even social decay in general--so much so that the promise of technology is "obscured". That promise is a cleaner and healthier world. If wise applications of science and technology do not lead to a better world, what else will?

  Microelectronics Revolution

The 1980s are likely to be considered as a more than somewhat interesting decade for the United Kingdom and indeed for other industrialized countries. The political, social and economic autonomic reflexes in operation for the greater part of this century will have to give way to the new as conditions change. Paramount amongst these changes is the advent of microelectronics with their ability to increase productivity and the end of cheap, easily manipulated sources of energy. Together these will undoubtedly change the pattern of industrialization and industrialized life in a radical manner not seen in the UK since the early 19th century.

Most technological changes are somewhat less than fundamental. Many act on an individual process of industry and so their effects on the general economy can be boxed off. Others act on the demand side with new products, often for new markets. Microelectronics, though, are different. It is difficult to think of parts of the economy on which they will not have an impact; it is especially very difficult to think of the many new consumer products that will evolve. It is already being used, in productive processes through robotics, in production planning through cheap computers, as cheap and easy to maintain components, and through telecommunications, teletext systems and word processing to provide, transmit and store information.

The resulting large increases in productivity will mean that increased levels of output will be produced using fewer resources of manpower, raw materials and energy. On the face of it this has to be a good thing, it opens vistas that were previously closed. The cost, however, is measured in terms of the resulting job losses, job changes and lack of new jobs. If we sit back and allow the market to work allocating wealth and jobs-in other words-continue as we are at present, either the technologies will not be introduced at all or there will be social confrontation on a massive scale.

This new technology improves productivity at precisely the time world trade growth is declining, and this is likely to diminish even further given the responses to the shortage of energy sources. This will almost certainly mean that our ability to supply will outstrip (超過 ) our ability to demand, giving a classic high unemployment.

The most important changes in the 1980s__________

  A.are affecting individual industries

B.ate not evident in the UK

  C.concern microelectronics and energy

D.are being caused by changes of attitudes

9、 Mary is looking for the book she lost yesterday

  10、根據(jù)以下材料回答題:

  The Mir Space Station

The Russian Mir Space Station, which came down in 2001 at last after 15 years of pioneering the concept of long-term human space flight, is remembered for its accomplishments in the human space flight history. It can be credited with many firsts in space.

The Soviet Union launched Mir, which was designed to last from three to five years, on February 20, 1986, and housed 104 astronauts over 12 years and seven months, most of whom were not Russian. In fact, it became the first international space station by playing host to162 people from 11 countries. From 1995 through 1998, seven astronauts from the United States took turns living on Mir for up to six months each2. They were among the 37 Americans who visited the station during nine stopovers by space shuttles.

The more than 400 million the United States provided Russian for the visits not only kept Mir operating, but also gave the Americans and their partners in the international station project valuable experience in long-term flight and multinational operations.

A debate continues over Mirs contributions to science. During its existence, Mir was the laboratory for 23,000 experiments and earned scientific equipment, estimated to be worth $80 million, from many nations.3 Experiments on Mir arc credited with a range of findings, from the first solid measurement of the ration of heavy helium atoms in space to how to grow wheat in space. But for those favoring human space exploration, Mir showed that people could live and work in space long enough for a trip to Mars. The longest single stay in space is the 437.7 days that Russian astronaut Valery Polyakov spent on Mir from 1994 to 1995. And Sergie Avdeyev accumulated 747.6 days in space in three trips to the space station. The longest American stay was that of Shannon Lucid4, who spent 188 days aboard Mir in 1996.

Despite the many firsts Mir accomplished, 1997 was a bad year out of 15 for Mir, In 1997, an oxygen generator caught fire. Later, the main computer system broke down, causing the station to drift several times and there were power failures.

Most of these problems were repaired, with American help and suppliers, but Mirs reputation as a space station was ruined.

Mirs setbacks arc nothing, though5, when we compare them with its accomplishments. Mir was a tremendous success, which will be remembered as a milestone in space exploration and the space station that showed long-term human habitation in space was possible. But its time to move on to the next generation. The International Space Station being built will be better, but it owes a great debt to Mir.

We can learn from the passage that the Mir Space Station__________

A.was designed to last over 5 years

B.played host to 7 astronauts from different countries

  C.was visited only by Americans

  D.was built by Russians

  El Nino (厄爾尼諾現(xiàn)象)

While some forecasting methods had limited SUCCESS predicting the E1 Nino a few months in advance, the Columbia University researchers say their method call predict large E1 Nino events up to two years in advance. That would be good news for governments, farmers and others seeking to plan for the droughts and heavy rainfall that El Nino can produce in various parts of the world.

Using a computer the researchers matched sea-surface temperatures to later El Nino occurrences between 1980 and and were then able to anticipate E1 Nino events dating back to1857, using prior sea-surface temperatures. The results were reported in the latest issue of the journal Nature.

The researchers say their method is not perfect, but Bryan C.Weare.a(chǎn) meteorologist at the University of California, Davis, who was not involved in the work, said it“suggests‘E1 Nino is indeed predictable.”

“This will probably convince others to search around more for even better methods.”said Weare. He added that the new method“makes it possible to predict El Nino at 1ong lead times.” Other models also use sea-surface temperatures, but they have not looked as far back because they need other data, which is only available for recent decades,Weare said.

The ability to predict the warming and cooling of the Pacitic is of immense importance’.The 1997 El Nino, for example, caused an estimated$20 billion in damage worldwide, offset by beneficial effects in other areas, said David Anderson,of the European Centre for Medium.Range Weather Forecasts in Reading England. The 1877 El Nino, meanwhile, coincided with a failure of the Indian monsoon and a famine that killed perhaps 40 million in India and China。prompting the development of seasonal forecasting,Anderson said.

When El Nino hit in 199 1 and 1997.200 million people were affected by flooding in China alone.a(chǎn)ccording to a United Nations report.

While predicting smaller E1 Nino events remains tricky.the ability to predict larger ones should be increased to at least a year if the new method is confirmed.

E1 Nino tends to develop between April and June and reaches its peak between December and February. The warming tends to last between 9 and 1 2 months and occurs every two to seven years

The new forecasting method does not predict any major El Nino events in the next two years, although a weak warming toward the end of this year is possible.

More than 8 hours sleep too much of a good thing

Although the dangers of too little sleep are widely known, new research suggests that people who sleep too much may also suffer the consequences.

Investigators at the University of California in San Diego found that people who clock up 9 or 10 hours each weeknight appear to have more trouble falling and staying asleep,as well as a number of other sleep problems, than people who sleep 8 hours a night.People who slept only 7 hours each night also said they had more trouble falling asleep and feeling refreshed after a night’s sleep than 8-hour sleepers.

These findings, which DL Daniel Kripke reported in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, demonstrate that people who want to get a good night’s rest may not need to set aside。more than 8 hours a night. He added that“it might be a good idea#39;’for people who sleep more than 8 hours each night to consider reducing the amount of time they spend in bed, but cautioned that more research is needed to confirm this.

Previous studies have shown the potential dangers of chronic shortages of sleep一for instance, one report demonstrated that people who habitually sleep less than 7 hours each night have a higher risk of dying within a fixed period than people who sleep more.

For the current report,Kripke reviewed the responses of 1,004 adults to sleep questionnaires,in which participants indicated how much they slept during the Week and whether they experienced any sleep problems.Sleep problems included waking in the middle of the night, arising early in the morning and being unable to fall back to sleep, and having fatigue interfere with day-to-day functioning.

KriDke found that people who slept between 9 and 10 hours each night were more likely to report experiencing each sleep problem than people who slept 8 hours. In an interview, Kripke noted that long sleepers may struggle to get rest at night simply because they spend too much time in bed.As evidence,he added that one way to help insomnia is to spend less time in bed.“It stands to reason that if a person spends too long a time in bed, then they’ll spend a higher percentage of time awake.”he said.

  Ford Abandoned Electric Vehicle

The Ford motor company’s abandonment of electric cars effectively signals the end of the road for the technology, analysts say.

General Motors。and Honda’ceased production of battery.powered cars in 1 999, to focus on fuel cell and hybrid electric gasoline engines, which are more attractive to the consumer.Ford has now announced it will do the same.

Three years ago.the company introduced the Think City two―seater car and a golf cart called the THINK, or Think Neighbor. It hoped to sell 5,000 cars each year and 10,000 carts. But a lack of demand means only about l,000 of the cars have been produced, and less than 1。700 carts have been sold so far in 2002.

“The bottom line is we don’t believe that this is the future of environment transport for the mass market.”Tim Holmes of Ford Europe said on Friday.“We feel we have given electric our best shot”

The Think City has a range of only about 53 miles and up to a six-hour battery recharge time.General Motors’EVI electric vehicle also had a limited range。of about 100 miles.

The very expensive batteries also mean electric cars cost much more than petrol-powered alternatives. An electric Toyot~RAV4 EV vehicle costs over$42,000 in the US, compared with just $17,000 for the petrol version.Toyota and Nissan…are now the only major auto manufacturers to produce electric vehicles.

“There is a feeling that battery electric has been given its chance.Ford now has to move on with its hybrid program“,and that is what we will be judging them on,”Roger Higman,a senior transport campaigner at UK Friends of the Earth, told the Environment News Service.

Hybrid cars introduced by Toyota and Honda in the past few years have sold well.Hybrid engines Offer Greater mileage than petrol―only engines , and the batteries recharge themselves. Ford says it thinks such vehicles will help it meet planned new guidelines“on vehicle emissions” in the U.S.

However, it is not yet clear exactly what those guidelines will permit. In June,General Motors and Daimler Chrysler won a court injunction, delaying by two years Californian legislation requiring car―makers to offer 100,000 zero-emission and other low―emission vehicles in the state by .Car manufacturers hope the legislation will be rewritten to allow for more low--emission,rather than zero―emission, vehicles.

1.What have the Ford motor company.General Motor’s and Honda done concerning electric cars?

A)They have started to produce electric cars.

B)They have done extensive research on electric Cars

C)They have given up producing electric cars.

D)They have produced thousands of electric Cars

2.According to Tim Holmes of Ford Europe,battery-powered cars

A)will be the main transportation vehicles in the future

B)will not be the main transportation vehicles in the future.

C)will be good to the environment in the future

D)will replace petrol―powered vehicles in the future.

  3. Which auto manufacturers are still producing electric vehicles?

  A)Toyota and Nissan

  B)General Motor’s and Honda

  C)Ford and Toyota

  D)Honda and Toyota

4.According to the eighth paragraph, hybrid cars

A)offer fewer mileage than petrol driven cars

B)run faster than petrol driven cars

C)run more miles than petrol driven cars

D)offer more batteries than petrol driven cars

5.Which of the following is true about the hope of car manufacturers according to the last paragraph?

  A)Low-emission cars should be banned.

B)Only zero-emission cars are allowed to run on motorways.

C)The legislation will encourage car makers to produce more electric cars.

D)The legislation will allow more 10w.emission to be produced.

第一篇 How to Be a Successful Businessperson

Have you ever wondered why some people are successful in business and others are not? Here’s a story about one successful businessperson. He started out washing dishes and todayhe owns 168 restaurants.

Zubair Kazi was born in Bhatkal, a small town in southwest India. His dream was to be anairplane pilot, and when he was 16 years old, he learned to fly a small plane.

At the age of 23 and with just a little money in his pocket, Mr. Kazi moved to the United States. He hoped to get a job in the airplane industry in California. Instead, he ended up working for acompany that rented cars.

A year later, Mr. Kazi sold his restaurant for a profit. With the money he eared, he bought threemore restaurants that were losing money. Again, he cleaned them up, improved the food, andretrained the employees. Before long these restaurants were making a profit, too.

Today Mr. Kazi owns 168 restaurants, but he isn’t planning to stop there. He’s looking for morepoorly managed restaurants to buy, “I love it when I go to buy a restaurant and find it’s amess,” Mr. Kazi says. “The only way it can go is up.”

第二篇:Three Ways to Become More Creative

Most people believe they don’t have much imagination. They are wrong. Everyone hasimagination, but most of us, once we become adults, forget how to access it. Creativity isn’talways connected with great works of art or ideas. People at work and in their free timeroutinely think of creative ways to solve problems. Maybe you have a goal to achieve, a trickyquestion to answer or you just want to expand your mind! Here are three techniques to helpyou.

This technique involves taking unrelated ideas and trying to find links between them. First, think about the problem you have to solve or the job you need to do. Then find an image, word, idea or object, for example, a candle. Write down all the ideas/words associated withcandles: light, fire, matches, wax, night, silence, etc. Think of as many as you can. The nextstage is to relate the ideas to the job you have to do. So imagine you want to buy a friend anoriginal present; you could buy him tickets to a match or take him out for the night.

Imagine that normal limitations don’t exist. You have as much time/space/money, etc. as youwant. Think about your goal and the new possibilities. If, for example, your goal is to learn toski(滑雪), you can now practice skiing every day of your life (because you have the time andthe money). Now adapt this to reality. Maybe you can practice skiing every day in December, orevery Monday in January.

Look at the situation from a different point of view. Good negotiators(談判者) use thistechnique in business, and so do writers. Fiction writers often imagine they are the charactersin their books. They ask questions: what does this character want? Why can’t she get it? Whatchanges must she make to get what she wants? What does she dream about? If your goalinvolves other people, put yourself “in their shoes”. The best fishermen think like fish!

36.According to the passage, when we become adults.

A.most of us are no longer creative.

B.we are not as imaginative as children.

C.we can still learn to be more creative.

D.we are unwilling to be creative.

37.According to the first technique, if you need to solve a problem, ______

A.you should link it with candles.

B.you have to think of buying a present for a friend.

C.you should link it with as many words as possible.

D.you could find an image and try to link it with the problem.

38.The second technique suggests that you just imagine

A.setting a goal is as simple as skiing.

B.you have every resource to achieve your goal.

  C.new possibilities will soon appear.

D.December and January are the best months for skiing.

39.The phrase “put yourself ‘in their shoes’” in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to

  A.dress yourself like them.

B.do as they ask you to.

  C.put on their shoes.

  D.think as they would.

40.We learn from the third technique that a good salesman should ask himself:

  A.what are my customers’ needs?

  B.what do I usually do?

C.what did my boss tell me to do?

D.how should I sell my products?

第三篇 The State of Marriage Today

Is there something seriously wrong with marriage today? During the past 50 years, the rate ofdivorce in the United States has exploded: almost 50% of marriages end in divorce now, andthe evidence suggests it is going to get worse. If this trend continues, it will lead to thebreakup of the family, according to a spokesperson for the National Family Association. Somefuturists predict that in 100 years, the average American will marry at least four times ,andextramarital(婚外的)affairs will be even more common than they are now.

But what are the reasons for this, and is the picture really so gloomy(陰暗的)? The answer tothe first question is really quite simple: marriage is no longer the necessity it once was. Theinstitution of marriage has been based for years partly on economic need. Women used to beeconomically dependent on their husbands as they usually didn’t have jobs outside the home. But with the rising number of women in well-paying jobs, this is no longer the case, so theydon’t feel that they need to stay in a failing marriage.

In answer to the second question, the outlook may not be as pessimistic(悲觀的)as it seems. While the rate of divorce has risen, the rate of couples marrying has never actually fallen verymuch, so marriage is still quite popular. In addition to this, many couples now simply livetogether and don’t bother to marry. These couples are effectively married, but they do notappear in either the marriage or divorce statistics. In fact, more than 50% of first marriagessurvive.

So is marriage really an outdated institution? The fact that most people still get marriedindicates that it isn’t. And it is also true that married couples have a healthier life than singlepeople: they suffer less from stress and its consequences, such as heart problems, andmarried men generally consider themselves more contented than their single counterparts.Perhaps the key is to find out what makes a successful marriage and apply it to all of ourrelationships!

41.Which of the following is true about the marriage in the United States today?

A.Divorce leads to the breakup of the family.

B.More than half of the married couples get divorced.

C.American people marry more than four times.

D.More and more people are getting divorced.
