So Many "Earths"
The Milky Way (銀河) contains billions of Earth-sized planets that could support life. Thats the finding of a new study. It draws on data that came from NASAs top planet-hunting telescope.
A mechanical failure recently put that Kepter space telescope out of service..Kepler had played a big role in creating a census of planets orbiting some 170,000 stars. Its date have been helping astronomers predict how common planets are in our galaxy. The telescope focused on hunting planets that might have conditions similar to those on Earth.
The authors of a study published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences conclude that between 14 and 30 out of every 100 stars with a mass and temperature similar to the Sun may host a planet that could support life as we know it. Such a planet would have a diameter at least as large as Earths but no more than twice that big. The planet also would have to orbit in a stars habitable zone. Thats where the surface temperature would allow any water to exist as liquid.
The new estimate of how many planets might fit these conditions comes from studying more that 42,000 stars and identifying suitable worlds orbiting them. The scientists used those numbers to extrapolate (推算) to the rest of the stars that the telescope could not see.
The estimate is rough, the authors admit. If applied to the solar system, it would define as habitable a zone starting as close to the Sun as Venus and running to as far away as Mars. Neither planet is Earthlike (although either might have been in the distant past). Using tighter limits, the researchers estimate that between 4 and 8 out of every 100 sunlike stars could host an Earth-sized world. These are ones that would take 200 to 400 days to complete a yearly orbit.
Four out of every 100 sunlike stars doesnt sound like a big number. It would mean, however, that the Milky Way could host more than a billion Earth-sized planets with a chance for life.

17.A。 利用題干關(guān)鍵詞Kepler和Earth等可以定位到第二段“The telescope focused on hunting planets that might have conditions similartothoseonEarth.”。
利用題干關(guān)鍵詞support life和smaller進(jìn)行定位,可以定位到第三段“…14 and 30 out ofevery 100 stars with a mass andtemperature similar to the Sun may host a planet that could support life as we know it.Such a planet would have a diameter at least as large as Earth’s but no more than twice that big”,即“據(jù)我們所知,
19.A。 利用題干關(guān)鍵詞orbit和habitable zone等可以定位到第三段“The planet also would have to orbit in a star’Shabitable zone.”,即“這樣的行星也必須在恒星的可居住區(qū)域內(nèi)的軌道運(yùn)行”,并結(jié)合上
利用題干關(guān)鍵詞new finding和170,000并結(jié)合題目順序與段落順序一致的原則,可以定位到第四段“The new estimate ofhow many planets might fit these conditions comes from studying more than 42.000 stars…”,即“有關(guān)多少行星符合這種情況的預(yù)測(cè)是來自對(duì)42000多顆叵星的研究……”。
21.A。 利用題干關(guān)鍵詞estimate和accurate等可以定位到第四段和第五段“The new estimate ofhow many planets might fit these conditions…The estimate is rough, the authors admit”,即“這項(xiàng)對(duì)于符合這些情況的行星的數(shù)量的預(yù)測(cè)……作者承認(rèn)這種預(yù)測(cè)是比較簡(jiǎn)單的”。由此可知,題干信息與原句信息一致,故答案為A。
22.C。題干:這是有關(guān)有生命存在可能性的行星的最早的研究發(fā)現(xiàn)。利用題干關(guān)鍵詞first和chance for life等可以定位到最后一段“It would mean, however, that the Milky Way could host more than a billion Earth.sized planets with a chance for life”,即“但是這意味著銀河系中有超過十億顆地球大小的行星都有生命存在的可能性”,但是沒有提及是否是最早的發(fā)現(xiàn),故答案為C。

"I wish,"the boy went on,"that I could be a brother like that."Paul looked at the boy in surprise, then he said again, "Would you like to take a ride in my car?"
"Oh yes,Id love that."
After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said,"Paul, would you mind driving in front of my house?"
Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbours that he could ride home in a big car. But Paul was wrong again. "Will you stop where those two steps are? the boy asked.
He ran up to the steps. Then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled brother. He sat him down on the step and pointed to the car.
"There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didnt cost him a cent. And some day Im going to give you one just like it…then you can see for yourself all the nice things in the Christmas windows that Ive been trying to tell you about."
Paul got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began an unforgettable holiday ride.

Dreams
"Dreams (夢(mèng) ) may be more important than sleep. We all need to dream," some sci-entists say.
Dreams take up about one quarter of our sleeping time. People have several dreams each night. Dreams are like short films. They are usually in colour. Some dreams are like old films. They come to us over and over again. That may be because the dreamer is worrying about something. Dreaming may be a way of trying to find an answer.
Some people get new ideas about their work from dreams. They may have been thinking about their work all day. These thoughts can carry over into dreams.
Sometimes we wake up with a good feel-ing from a dream. But often we cant re-member the dream. Dreams can disappear (消失) quickly from memory (記憶).
Too much dreaming can be harmful (有害的). The more we sleep, the longer we dream. The mind is hard at work when we dream. That is why we may have a long sleep and still wake up tired.
