job interview problems
rod cornwell (international director, thomas international) gives expert video advice on: what do i do if i'm going to be late for my interview?; if i do badly in an interview can i ask for a second chance?; what do i do if i feel a question is too personal? and more...
what do i do if i can't make my interview?
if you have a problem that means you can't make your job interview, for goodness sake, let the interviewer know. nothing annoys them more than them having to wait around and waste time when people fail to turn up for an interview. it's very rude.
what do i do if i'm going to be late for my interview?
if you're going to be late for an interview, don't arrive and say, "oh, i thought it was half an hour later than it actually was," and try to bluff the job interviewer. that's not the way to do things in a job interview. the best thing you can do if you're running late is, as soon as you possibly can, contact the interviewer and say, "look, my train's delayed" or, "i'm stuck in traffic," or, "ever so sorry - i'm going to be late. is that okay?" and they'll either say, "no, you're running too late, i've got other meetings" or "yes, that's fine, see you when you get here." but for goodness sake, let them know before the job interview if there's a problem. there's nothing worse than arriving late for a job interview and not telling anybody.
what do i do if i don't know the answer to a question?
if you are asked a question in a job interview and you do not know the answer tell the interviewer. be honest: don't try to give them some fictitious answer that you just made up. that looks really silly. you won't get any brownie points or credibility in a job interview by doing that.
if i do badly in an interview can i ask for a second chance?
if you feel that a job interview has gone really badly - and you get to the end of it and believe you haven't shown your true potential here - then by all means ask for a second chance. sometimes the interviewer will say absolutely not, but other times they might admire your honesty and agree to give you a second chance at the job interview.
what do i do if i feel a question is too personal?
if you feel during a job interview that an interviewer is asking you personal questions, and it's getting a little bit too personal, you have every right to say, "i don't wish to answer that question. i feel it is too personal." every good interviewer knows that you are allowed to say that in a job interview. don't feel it's going to threaten your chances of getting the job.
